2 year old girl run over in China, pedestrians do nothing

Chinese media and internet users have voiced shock at a hit-and-run incident involving a two-year-old child left injured in the road as passers-by ignored her.

The toddler was hit by a van on Thursday in the city of Foshan.

After the van sped off, several pedestrians and vehicles passed the girl without stopping. Several minutes later she was hit by another vehicle.

A rubbish collector finally helped her, but she is said to be seriously hurt.

The incident was captured on surveillance cameras and aired on local media.

'Lacking conscience'
The footage showed the van hitting the little girl, pausing briefly while she was under the vehicle and then driving off, running over her legs.

It then showed about a dozen passers-by, including cyclists, a motorcyclist and a woman and child, noticing the little girl lying injured in the street but walking on.

Scam fears
Some said they understood the dilemma for the passers-by - that if they helped out they might incur costs or be blamed for the accident.


The China Daily reported incidents in January in which elderly men who fell in the street were left alone because people did not want to get involved.

It cited an earlier case in which a man, Peng Yu, who helped an injured elderly lady to hospital was then found by a court to be liable for some of her medical costs.

Another case - in which an elderly woman believed to have fallen in the road accused a man, Xu Yunhe, who stopped to help her, of hitting her with his car - also attracted considerable attention.

"There's been so many cases where people have been treated unjustly after doing good things," one comment said.

"I am not as rich as Xu Yunhe and Peng Yu are, we are all poor grassroots people," said another. "If we get caught in a scam, this is it. All we can do is to dial 120 (the emergency number)."

Gotta resist the lizard brain reaction to fulminate on the chinese or the passerbys. At least the BBC article gives you context. It's definitely an issue where laws should be passed so people trying to help don't get in trouble for helping.

She died from brain trauma iirc, and was paralyzed from being ran over and had to have machines breathe for her.

I think that is just a nice excuse for them. People don't get scammed in America like that (that I've ever heard at least), but they still refuse to help people unless they look wealthy/hot. Someone posted a video in response in the youtube thread that summed it up perfectly.

Sad, but true. If it was a male he would have been helped. And sadly there aren't much child abuse laws in China either, so letting a kid roam the streets alone is normal. But I agree, either way this is inhumane.

When I was in China our guide told us to be very careful crossing the road because laws are not there to protect pedestrians like in North America and most drivers have already hit someone.

The writer gave some insight as to why some of the people passing by didn't help:

The incident is the latest example of passers-by acting indifferently to victims injured in crimes. In this case, some blamed the parents for letting the girl walk on the street alone. More criticized the phenomenon of people passing by without helping, caused at least in part by previous extortion attempts from the injured and their families who have sometimes tried to blame the person helping.

The notorious "Nanjing Peng Yu" incident is fresh in people's minds even after five years. In 2006, in Nanjing City in east China, a young man named Peng Yu who had just gotten off a bus went to aid a 65-year-old woman who was knocked down by a fellow passenger. The woman eventually sued Peng, claiming he was the one who knocked her down.

In September, an 88-year-old man lay helpless on a crowded avenue in Wuhan City in central China for about 90 minutes before someone took him to the hospital. The old man died from a nosebleed that blocked his airway, suffocating him.
