Shit is super situtational. Seasonal as well.
Warm - Go out with friends, drink, hit the beach, boating, etc
Normal (NYC fall, spring) - See a band, play video games, watch/go to football games
Winter - Much more gaming, less social activities but more drinking in said activities
All the time - Go outside as much as possible, avoid sitting down (FU WORK CHAIR), game, post on BG, try to find shit I haven't done yet and do it, same with restaurants. I'm a minor foodie person, I like yummy food.

Haha, not for a grade, just for general interest. I had a conversation with a friend about people who tend to be successful compared to those that work lower end jobs, and coming from a tech perspective (both of us are programmers), we had agreed it boils down to how you manage your free time, but I'm not 100% sold on that, so I wanted to see if it is true.

I tend to find my free time most spent with just tinkering with shit. I find some general interest in something, and dig around til I've satisfied that interest. As an example, I found some philosophy shit online and found it interesting, so I've been reading philosophy books non-stop. This is how I picked up programming and most science and political perspectives as well, and interests that extend into 3d modeling or arduino stuff. I'd say 80% of the shit I do in my free time I try to make productive. But comparative to the other people my age, I don't think this is the norm at all. People usually like to do more social hobbies or watch tv or something, stuff I'd consider "Doing nothing..", and I was just wondering how many of those people who take that route are successful in life comparative to how many follow this other route and are 'successful'.

Thought it was an interesting question and a general survey would answer it fairly decently, so I turned here.

I really don't have much free time. My time outside of my first job is taken up by my second job, since I teach in the evenings, and half of the course is online.

I am a voracious reader, likely to pick a book up and put it down within 72 hours. I'll read the same book 2-3 times, but because I go through books so fast, I never really consider it a hobby, or something I make time for.

I used to read a lot and learn languages randomly, usually on my own, but that really depends on what I work with and how much time I have. Other than that I like to make things to decorate my apartment, curtains, cushions, repaint furniture, right now I want to put tiles on my balcony if my landlord allows it. I used to play games a lot when I was in college, but I don't have the time anymore, so it's more of something I do to unwind instead of TV.

I've found that successful people know how to properly decompress in their free time. If I don't go hike 10+ miles up and down a mountain at least once a month, I won't be able to focus. It's about knocking the life back into you when the day-to-day stress/BS is trying to knock it out of you.

Also, what do you define as being a successful person - money, job title, letters after your name, fame, personal happiness, family happiness, ...?
