    Upgrading Graphics Card

Hi all, I've been considering upgrading my graphics card. I just bought a new desktop and it came with an ATI Radeon HD 5450 w/ 1gb VRAM. It has an i7-2600 3.4 ghz processor and 8gb ram. I'm playing on a 23" led monitor, so I'd love to be able to play SC2, Rift, etc... in 1080p on high settings.

Basically I know bare basics with regards to graphics cards and was wondering if anyone could refer me to a good one to upgrade too. Should I get another ATI or swap to NVIDIA?

On a related note, the power supply is 350W so I'm assuming I would need to upgrade this as well, any specific brand and minimum Wattage that I should look for.

If any other info is needed please let me know.

    Thanks for any info!

Grab a 500-650watt psu and an hd 6850, that's all you'll need for 1080p gaming.

Running an AMD Phenom II X6 1100T with 4 hard drives and a Radeon HD 6870 on a 650 W power supply. Something that power should be fine for you.

Ok thanks, seems like the 6870 is what a lot of people have been recommended so I'll probably be looking into that for sure. Are there any compatability issues I'll need to pay attention to with upgrading the graphics card and psu? Thanks!

If the psu has the correct pins for the card you're good to go. Corsair or antec are both reliable brands.

Sorry for derailing the thread, but i'm curious as to how much you paid for said desktop. I want to get one to gut the parts and put them on my case. Only if the price makes sense.

You might want to wait on buying the new card. The new 7000 series is coming out soon, and should drop the price on the 6870.

this one makes good sense. It's refurb but Tigerdirect has good warranties and good customer service. It still suffers from the problem of not having a good enough videocard though.

Thanks, i have a 560ti that i plan to sli it anyways, so i'm good. I could care less about refurbs, and tiger has a store a couple miles away so i'm sure it's available.

This is the one that I got, however I bought it on sale for like 200 off. Can easily get one a few hundred cheaper w/o the monitor and a slightly slower cpu.

And thanks for the heads up on waiting.

That's the one I got about a year ago and it was $240 at the time.

Now going for $180 for the effective current card.

Not a bad deal if the price will drop soon. I wonder how far it will drop. I haven't found anything yet I want to play that that card wouldn't play. If you already have an AMD card, staying AMD will make the driver switch easier. You might not have to reinstall the AMD Vision software.
