Nintendo not attending E3, too mainstream

In an investor presentation, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata announced that Nintendo will skip the usual large-scale E3 press conference this year in favor of "a few smaller events that are specifically focused on our software lineup for the U.S. market."

One of these events will be for American distributors, with another closed event "for mainly the Western gaming media." Iwata noted that Nintendo is not planning to announce any new hardware at this E3, with showing off software the main focus.

While Nintendo is dropping a lot of mainstream press attention with this move, it makes a lot of sense for a company with the recent financial history of Nintendo to skip out on some expensive pageantry. Especially when the company makes E3-level announcements monthly, for a tiny fraction of the cost.

Nevermind they already said Mario Kart U and 3D mario U would be playable at E3. Also Smash Bros.

But no, they are still going to be at E3 but instead of one big conference will do several smaller ones. Lets be honest here, E3 hasnt been that great for awhile and like Nintendo even said, its more for Investors and Analyst then it is for fans.

They will still do Nintendo Directs before and after and really, it seems to work well for them.

Hell, most of the time Sony, Microsoft and Nintendos conferences go on for to long and dont really show off much.

Nintendo has quiet a few games coming out for 3DS and Wii U during holiday and early 2014.

Yes, it really won't hurt them to skip out on E3. It isn't a sign of doom and gloom; it's a sign of everyone giving fewer and fewer fucks about E3 as a whole.

I wonder if by smaller presentations, they mean in line with the 3 presentations they gave last year. And Nintendo's had some pretty good conferences in recent memory. Wasn't it 2 E3s ago that they had a bunch of big reveals and everyone was excited?

Terrible Wii U launch... But 3DS is huge... Don't get this move by Nintendo at all. Even if they don't have reason for a large scale presentation they need to at least put their big boy pants on to compete w/Sony and MS who are gonna be a lot about the next gen

It seems like E3 is getting more and more popular each year, based on the coverage anyways. Not sure why they would want to skip out on the massive amounts of fans wanting to see what they have to show off. I doubt their mini conferences would have as much of an audience.

Personally, I've always loved Nintendo's conferences. I've been going to them for years, and I've found them to be the most interesting. Microsoft and Sony are into a bunch of abstract, boring shit, or have otherwise dull presenters that I really couldn't care less about. Even when Nintendo is cheesy, at least they're that, as it's better to have some personality than none.

I've also never done much at Nintendo's space in E3's convention hall. I didn't bother to wait to play games, as I'd already been to their conference, and didn't see a need. When "The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword" was shown, for example, conference attendees could play it in the conference hall, and didn't have to wait to do so on the E3 floor; likewise with the 3DS's debut, various 3DS games made available in the square outside of the conference hall, and so on...

So, yeah, no fucks given.

EDIT: Really, if you want to talk about doing things for the fans, Nintendo does that at every one of their conferences. I loved when they opened one with this:

The question I want to know is whether their stock will take a harder hit from not being at E3, or if they did, and tried to keep afloat against everyone wanting to know about the PS4/720 instead.

Better off putting their resources towards getting those WiiU (and 3DS) games polished as much as they can for the holiday season that it sorely needs.
