Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City (New RE Game)

    Via Kotaku:

Slip into the uniform of a member of a crack Umbrella Security Services squad member tasked with cleaning up both the zombies and the survivors of the original T-virus outbreak in Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, a new title on the way from former SOCOM developer Slant Six Games.

Back in November of last year, a leaked document forwarded to Kotaku suggested that Slant Six Games of SOCOM: Confrontation fame had been tapped by Capcom to take the Resident Evil franchise in an entirely new direction. Now the latest issue of the Official Xbox Magazine confirms those suggestions, and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is heading to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this winter.

Considering Slant Six's pedigree, the story of Operation Raccoon City makes perfect sense. Rather than one character against a horde of mutated zombies, players will become a member of the Umbrella Security Services. Their job? Contain the zombie outbreak; eliminate any survivors. It's a very dark game, giving fans of the series a fresh perspective on the events that occurred in Resident Evil 2 and 3.

The USS team will consist of Vector, Beltway, Bertha, and Spectre, with each character having a specific part to play in the narrative.

The USS forces will also find themselves at odds with the U.S. Special Forces, creating three-point battles between military groups and the infected hordes.

While gamers don't have to be familiar with the series to play Operation Raccoon City, those that are will visit familiar places, see some familiar faces, and possibly even change the future of the Resident Evil series by shooting those familiar faces until they stop moving. It seems Capcom is letting Slant Six run loose with game canon, and characters like Leon Kennedy are not guaranteed to survive the experience.

Hit up the link below to read more features of the upcoming game, or pick up the May issue of the Official Xbox Magazine for the full report.

    Not sure if want.

    More info:

    - The game takes place in 1998, a time where Resident Evil fans already know what's set to take place. The title lets you enjoy the series from a new perspective, as the men and women who are technically responsible for it all.
    - Rather than continuing the zombie slaying antics of BSAA agents, you're taken back to the original outbreak "that underscored both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis."
    - The game doesn't require any crazy amounts of knowledge of the past titles or characters involved in the series. The title opens up to a "quartet of new faces". Essentially, you're playing as members of the official Umbrella Security Services squad.
    - Operation Raccoon City is a team-based shooter allowing four members of the USS team to destroy all evidence of the ongoing outbreak. Along with slaying the zombies, you're looking to "kill pretty much every survivor possible".
    - The gameplay is described as "dirty", and the series will feel much darker than it has up to this point.
    - The game features three factions that Capcom has stated make up a "three-corner conflict". The other two factions are the US Spec Ops, who are there to repel the USS, and the "bio-organic weapon monsters (BOWs) created by Umbrella.
    - The USS team is made up of the following characters: Vector, Beltway, Bertha, and Spectre. Depending on which character you choose, the responsibilities that you're asked to do within your team will variate.
    - Hunk, first seen in Resident Evil 2 as a hidden character, is the inspiration behind the USS team.
    - "Whichever team you play on, you'll be facing Umbrella-created horrors in between skirmishes with each other".
    - Zombies in the game can sense you in three different manners: sight, sound, and smell.
    - A situation is described in the game where Vector cloaks himself to stir up previously slumbering zombies to use against the Special Ops military foes.
    - Quite a few scenarios in the game aren't "all about headshots". A quote in the article states, "It's about shooting the other soldiers - manipulating the, making them bleed."
    - The game will take you through a number of familiar areas if you're a Resident Evil junkie who remembers your journey to Raccoon City.
    - Operation Raccoon City, depending on how you play the game, will give you the option to "change the history of Resident Evil". Not only will you have the chance to meet and interact with various characters from the series, but you'll even have the opportunity to kill them.
    - One of th mottos repeated to OXM throughout the demo was "Kill Leon". It's also stated that if you choose to represent in the game as the Special Ops team, that you'd more than likely have the goal of trying to save Leon Kennedy.
    - Slant Six or Capcom won't reveal if any other characters will be playable in the title just yet, but it'd make sense to see quite a few big cameos.
    - The title will still see players relying on collecting herbs to heal from any attacks you may suffer. You won't need to hoard any herbs, but they'll still benefit you to collect them throughout the game.
    - "This is not a one-versus-one game where you've got one clip full of ammo and zombies on you. If you've ever thought of those times in an RE game when you thought, 'I'd wish I had a big gun', that's what this game is. It's not fair to give people big guns, then take all the ammo away."
    - One of the pictures in the article showcases a zombie being used as a "meatshield".
    - Operation Raccoon City allows players to earn XP for kills, with these points helping you survive the onslaught, and to help to encourage you to anihilate everything in your path.
    - The XP will allow you to earn new abilities, such as Vector's cloaking skill, and new weapons.
    - Tyrants will most definitely be included in the title.

A Resident Evil game not by Capcom (unless I misread?)? Interesting.

The optimist in me thinks it's a pretty cool idea for the franchise, potential run in's with previous main characters would be cool, as well as essentially getting to be the "bad guys" for once, but the realist in me says its going to be another blah swat style FPS. :/

Not sure I like another dev doing RE. I know people don't have a great love for 5, but I thought it was pretty decent. Letting someone else go and ruin canon is kind of a bad idea, IMO. Instead of going this route they should develop it themselves and take it back to it's roots. Like where RE4 was going. RE5 was just a action adventure game with almost no scares. The also butchered Wesker beyond repair by making him a tyrant.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I'm sort of the exact opposite. I don't think RE4 was going back to the roots at all lol, and basically turned the series on it's head with the ammo thing. It first irritated me how easy it was to get bullets in 4, but the style grew on me. I absolutely loved 5 though because of local co-op mode. I can agree the game was shit if you didn't do co-op, but if you did it's fucking awesome.

I wouldn't mind more retro REs, but I hope for more local co-op ones because they are so hard to come by.

Well I don't mean so much the battle system, because yeah.. you didn't feel threatened at any given time because of how much ammo you had. You literally had to throw it out to make room for other shit. I meant more the atmosphere and tension in the game. Even though it was tons of running and shooting (not at the same time mind you!) the feeling of the game was very creepy. You never really knew what to expect around the next corner. I didn't get that feeling from 5. The updated gamecube version and RE0 proved you could do it that style. I'm all for another game like that.

The fuck is with Capcom outsourcing like... all of their games aside from Street Fighter lately? Shit's getting silly. I guess they must be making a bigger profit off them but it just feels like a terrible idea in a lot of instances. Or maybe I'm just bitter about DmC still.

It wasn't just the amount of ammo you had in RE4, you could run into a massive crowd of zombies and just destroy them with a some face stabs and his giant hitbox invincible roundhouse kick of doom if you wanted, and generally walk away unscathed. Not to mention his mobile armory size inventory that let you carry an absurd amount of healing items, grenades, different guns at the same time, etc. Even if it was too easy (even on the harder difficulty), it's still one of my favorite games thou, since it was awesome in pretty much every other regard right down to the awesomely cheesy dialogue. My only complaint with it other than the difficulty was the lack of puzzles, compared to RE1 anyway.

RE5 was fun for the 4 hour co-op romp that it was, but it felt nothing like an RE game, there was nothing really special or memorable about it besides some of wesker's dialogue, and the boulder punching quick time event.

Messing with/ruining the canon irritates me to no end. I realize it's stupid, but that's very off putting from the get-go.

The canon is still there but it gives the options of making things happen that aren't what the official endings/happening of RE2/3 said happened.

I'm going with Notsureifwant.jpg on this one while remaining very hopeful on it.

Capcom is retarded and thinks that westerners can design their games better than they can. Stupid producers who think eastern and western design is inter-changeable...

I love RE as much as I do DMC, and seeing Capcom do this makes me want to cry.

Also, story wise this game is going to be a fucking mess. RE's narrative is barely coherent at the best of times, this doesn't seem to help any.

Capcom has already made spin-off games that fuck up the canon themselves, how is this any worse in that regard?

Because there's a big difference in accidentally messing with continuity, and then having a game where they can just kill off every key character trying to survive the outbreak.

That said, the game idea sounds decent, so I'm hoping some good info is released before I make my decision to completely ignore this game like I did with that new DMC monstrosity.

I'll definitely be playing it - I'm just not sure I'll like it.

I'm still hoping Capcom will just once go back to their roots and make a game as awesome as RE 1, 2 and 3 :/

You mean major characters could optionally die, like chris/jill/barry could optionally die in the first game? Yeah that's an awful way to mess up the continuity.
