Dailyshow forgot some details about creepy Puerto Rican puppet

Some of you might have watched this segment where the Daily Show interviewed a puppet named La Comay which is half news show/half comedy show in Puerto Rico, but in the segment they neglected to mention any information about the controversy currently surrounding the show (which is named SuperXclusivo).

The current controversy erupted because the show SuperXclusivo reported on a recent murder where a local publicist was burned and then beaten to death. The show asked whether the publicist deserved what he got for visiting an area of prostitution. The cohost also mentioned that the area is filled with "drugs, prostitution, and homosexuality!". This show is famous for vitriolic rants against gay people, often calling them "patos" which is puertorican slang for faggots. The show also has history of making racist comments.

So as a response to this recent event, a boycot was started against the show SuperXclusivo, and a vigil is planned for this wednesday at 6pm at the convention center in the capital to protest this show. So far, the boycott movement has been able to strip over 40 advertisers from the show, even though the show is one of the most watched on the island.

I'll post a few links for added info in a second post.

This link provides videos of examples where racist, homophobic comments have been made on the show. It even has the video of the program that started this recent boycott. The videos are in spanish, but the site provides a quick summary of what is said in each video segment. Those who can understand spoken spanish can get a graps of how nasty the show can be. Here are a few quotes from the article:

But who is La Comay? And why do people want to boycott her so badly?

Managed by Antulio ‘Kobbo’ Santarrosa, the controversial character is the main attraction of Spanish-speaking networks WAPA TV and WAPA America’s “Super Exclusivo.”

Transmitted on primetime during weekdays, the popular gossip show has become a platform where political and entertainment issues are discussed, flavored with homophobic, racist and mean intent tones.
Most recently, "The Daily Show" reported on the program, but neglected to include the fact that many Puerto Ricans are currently boycotting it after comments made by Santarrosa implied publicist José Enrique Gomez Saladín -- whose brutal murder sparked a protest movement against violence on the island -- was responsible for his own death.
From that moment, the organized group was formed and began pressuring the TV show advertisers into pulling their ads from the show. Protesters have already claimed several victories. Brands like Coca Cola, Ford, Sprint and most recently Burlington Coat Factory, have made sure their names are not be associated with the puppeteer, and have said their companies do not sympathize with his remarks.
The boycott group has called on Puerto Ricans, on and off the island, to inhibit from watching the show and to stop supporting the sponsors that are still advertising on it. They have also organized a vigil for Wednesday to raise more awareness on the topic as well as demanding an end to the hate speech.

This article has a little more detail:

On Thursday night's episode of The Daily Show, comedian Wyatt Cenac ended his four-year run as one of the show's correspondents with a segment about a news and gossip show in Puerto Rico called SuperXclusivo, essentially praising its work. But Cenac's report neglected to mention that there is currently a controversy brewing on the island surrounding the show.

Super Xclusivo, which has long been the commonwealth's highest-rated TV show, came under fire last week after co-host Hector Travieso and co-host puppet, La Comay (voiced by Kobbo Santarrosa) hinted that a brutal murder on the island may have partially been the victim's fault because he may have been soliciting a prostitute. The show defended itself, saying it was simply repeating news reported in the island's newspapers.

But more than 50,000 Puerto Ricans joined a Facebook group to boycott the show in less than 24 hours, and a handful of companies including Walmart and AT&T have pulled their advertising from the show in response. The group has now grown to 70,000 Facebook members and organizers say they won't stop fighting until the show is removed from the airways.
Critics of SuperXclusivo, including spokesperson for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Pedro Julio Serrano, say that "bullying and hate" have long been the "trademarks of SuperXclusivo." Serrano says that the show has had anti-gay and racist undertones for many years, and that Puerto Ricans are sick of it. WAPA TV and SuperXclusivo did not respond to requests for comment regarding the boycott.

A number of prominent members of the Puerto Rican community, including singer Ricky Martin and Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) have joined the movement to boycott the program.
The Latino Rebels, a blog which offers commentary on topics of importance to U.S. Latinos, expressed frustration at the glaring omission in what they call a "fluff piece" about the popular Puerto Rican show.

"You would have thought someone on The Daily Show could have paused for a minute and rethought the timing of the segment," the Latino Rebels noted, adding that it was possible that the Comedy Central show wasn't aware of the controversy. "In this case, [The Daily Show] could have done a bit more homework about La Comay."

I hope we can get rid of this show for good.

It's not about comedy central offending anyone. I'm just giving details that the segment didn't to cover.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that they filmed that segment more than 2 weeks ago, thus missing out on the Boycott movement. Perhaps they didn't have enough back-up segments to make it through without using that one.

Those Liberal Media pukes on that Comedy show totally suck at reporting all the facts. Their anti-gay tactics make me so angry!

Yea, i figured as much. I wanted to take this opportunity for those who watched that segment to actually get a chance to see that the guy behind the puppet is a nasty homophobe, and all around an awful human being.

I'm assuming PR is as super religious as DR is, so the homophobic stance doesn't really surprise me.

TDS didn't do a news segment on it. It was a pre-recorded bit.

TDS segment wasn't intended to be an expose, so claiming they forgot details is a little lol.

However, I think it was a bad choice to use that program for their comedic sketch given how racist and homophobic it is.

also your island gets news from muppet knockoffs lol

Apparently simultaneous vigils will also be held in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.
