Poor guy.
What's France interest in this?
Retaliation?
Was Mali an ex-French colony?
It was but has long since dissolved it's ties. France's main objective is to get the current Al-Queda led regime out of office and replace the old government that was kicked out in 2012. Interested to see how this plays out.
Someone asked what France's interests in this is, and i guess Mali being an ex-colony is it.
European countries feel a significant "white man's burden" towards their former colonies.
Somalia, not Mali, but French forces none-the-less

couple pics and update on the situation
So the french go in, they get ripped to shreds but general consensus of good luck to them.
America does it, rabble rabble rabble!
What?
It seems America trained these particular rebels, so go go shitty anti-terrorism program completely backfiring.
OH, AFRICA!
the article explicitly states we trained the government forces that were fighting the insurgents, but the rout of government forces by the returning Libyan Jihadists back in March sparked an Islamist mutiny among the junior officer corps which, apparently, had been infiltrated and compromised to an unimaginable degree. illustrates a common problem when battling domestic Islamism, the ideology spreads like a parasite to individuals already in the military and administrative apparatuses; Pakistan's ISI has notoriously been infiltrated for decades
additionally the returning fighters were primarily Tuaregs, Malian Berbers essentially (Berber tribes forming the heart of the resistance against Gaddafi), and guess who commanded the units that defected ? Tuaregs. in addition to the spread of the Islamic ideology it appears ethnic loyalties proved far stronger than national ones, Tuaregs would not kill their own for the Bambaran (dominant Malian ethnic group) government. a decision they may regret as the Islamist leader of the movement have taken total control of northern Mali and Tuaregs leaders almost entirely disenfranchised
that said our program was obviously still a total failure, and i'm glad France at least is attempting to prevent the nation from falling entirely. humanitarian reports coming out of Mali are sickening and hard to digest
another p good article detailing the rebels situation and what theyre doing to defend themselves:
