    Adopting a dog

Sup nigs. I got a quick pet question. My girlfriend and I are living in a 3 story townhouse with one roommate. We currently have an 8 month old cat named Dudley who is dope as shit. He likes to play a lot and is a little bit of a biter. My girlfriend wants to get another cat but I think his personality is cool enough to be with a dog.

Originally, I wanted to get a pit bull puppy that we could raise alongside our cat Dudley, but my girlfriends parents (who are huge dog lovers) absolutely detest the breed. Apparently her aunt's neighbor had a pit and he killed their house cat who was accidentally let outside.

We've been looking around on a lot of adoption sites and I've sort of fallen for this grown Black Lab/Terrier mix. She's got a brindle coat which looks dope as all hell and the owners say she's very affectionate and likes to play.

My main question is whether or not it would be easier on my cat to adopt a fully grown dog vs a puppy he can grow with. Dudley is very friendly and loves to play fight, which means I'd like to find a dog who isn't TOO big, but likes to horse around. I am not in the market for a tiny bitch dog either, but I don't want anything that would be too big and accidentally hurt the cat.

Does anyone have any suggestions which breed of dog would fit our situation? I'd prefer something with a short coat because I live in south florida, and it gets hot down here. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Pug. Always pug.

Also, pit bulls are amazing. Any dog can be vicious.

Whatever breed you do get just make sure you discipline it with a water bottle.

DJ, tell your girl's family to stfu and get a pit bull. I'm white as the newly fallen snow and got a pit bull. If I were black I'd have like 9 pit bulls and name them all after dead black people. It's your obligation to get a pit bull.

It's not the dog, it's the owner.

With that, pit bulls are great dogs. My cousin has one and he's sucha momma's boy. Shakes when she's not around. He's a big wuss! But an adorable wuss.

Whatever kind of dog you get, make sure you actually train, supervise, and control it. I was walking home from the vet with my dog yesterday, and a loose pitbull ran straight for him and jumped on him and started biting his neck and shaking him. It had no collar. I had to jump on it and put my hand in its mouth to get it to stop shaking my dog. I'm really lucky actually that that worked and I didn't end up with a mauled face or arm. The owner showed up a few seconds later and picked up the dog. Guy was like "lol its not my fault, she just got out. ppls just hate pitbulls." and I was like "I don't have a problem with pitbulls, my problem was that she was running loose with no collar." And then he told me he didn't appreciate my snotty attitude.

My dog is okay, just some red bite / bruise marks that didn't fully break the skin. But he's 13- he's an old dog, and he's feeling all his hurts now today. So I've got to watch him cry when he sits up too fast, and am just generally fucking mad at irresponsible dog owners today.

Re: Grown vs. puppy. If you can get a dog that has already grown up with / around cats and is known to be chill with them, that's probably best. Puppy has pros and cons. It's a blank slate so you can make sure he learns the right things - but you have to make sure that you do it right. And puppies sometimes do dumb things that cats dont appreciate. Go slow with introducing them, no matter what you do.

I would get a puppy. With an adult dog in a new situation I would worry it would take the cats play fighting the wrong way and attack. With a pit bull too all it would take is one chomp. Maybe a Boxer? They are medium size, have short coats and I've heard the have a good temperament.

Ugh, I showed my girlfriend this thread because she's on the fence about getting a pit. She says she's cool with it but we have another roommate moving in who is bringing two cats in August, and now she's the one who is crying about the decision.

If we got the dog now, he'd already be in a situation where he's living with one cat. Adding a couple more in August (when the second roommate gets here) shouldn't be a big deal, should it..?

I would have called the cops regardless and told them that the pit attacked your dog unprovoked. That's the kind of dog that is going to end up hurting someone. I would have then beat the ever loving fuck out of the guy for being an asshole when his dog just attacked yours.

We had two cats before we got Voltron. One of the cats(Meatball) is a former feral cat who hates people and all other animals. He hides a lot. Charlie on the other hand gets along fine with Voltron so long as Voltron doesn't rush him or corner him. Voltron wants nothing more than to play with both of the cats but they generally don't want anything to do with him. They are mostly content to coexist and not interact. But he was also two years old when we got him and he came from a home that had cats, dogs, and children. With a puppy you're going to have to work at it a little harder. Training is imperative for a pit bull.

I had no phone and was kind of freaking out, but a nice lady who was also there called 911 for me. Animal Control showed up and was basically like "go back to the vet, we'll deal with this- we know this guy."

Sigh. If they know of the guy then this isn't the first time it's happened. And that's just wrong.

That's almost the EXACT type of dog that I want. He isn't too big or too furry but he still has a little size to him. My new roommate is coming from Boston and she already has her tickets bought, so I could pull a fast one and just go out and get the dog. I don't know though. My current roommate is also 100% for getting a pit bull puppy, I've always wanted one but I don't want my new roommate to feel uncomfortable moving in.

He's a very gentle dog, good with other animals and great around my two year old niece. Barely sheds, and is about 60 pounds. Honestly I'd recommend getting one, he's a blue nose pit bull, best dog I've ever owned.
