Two people are dead and two are hospitalized following a shooting Monday morning at Sparks Middle School in Nevada, just outside of Reno, according to officials.

The victims were not immediately identified during a press conference, according to the Associated Press.

Police responded to a shooting at Sparks Middle School shortly after 7 a.m. and students were evacuated to a nearby elementary school. Early reports said the shooter had been "neutralized."

The area around Sparks Middle School and a neighboring elementary school were closed to the public except for parents picking up their children.

Police added that the school scene is now "safe," and that the shooter was "neutralized." At a press conference police said the shootings took place on school property.

In a Twitter message, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval said that he was "deeply saddened to learn of the horrific shooting at Sparks Middle School this morning."

In another message, he said that "Kathleen and I extend our thoughts and prayers to the victims and those affected by the tragic events at Sparks Middle School this morning."

At the press conference around 9 a.m., police said the shootings took place on school property and "didn't happen in the streets or anything like that."

Authorities also said that they were now moving into investigative mode, focusing on the homicide investigation resulting from the shooting.

Yahoo article said the shooter tried to shoot two kids and the teacher shielded them, saving their lives and giving his. Shooter then turned the gun on himself. Teacher is a hero.

Parents of shooter might be charged, up to 200 officers responded to the event

Authorities in Nevada are weighing prosecuting the parents of a 12-year-old who shot a teacher dead and wounded two classmates before killing himself.

Officials in the city of Sparks have not identified the boy but believe the weapon came from his home.

He opened fire at Sparks Middle School on Monday, killing maths teacher and Afghanistan veteran Michael Landsberry.

Police say Landsberry, 45, was shot as he tried to coax the boy to drop the gun.

School District Police Chief Mike Mieras said Landsberry walked towards the boy with the gun, enabling the children on the playground to flee.

"I cannot express enough appreciation for Mr Landsberry," Washoe County Schools Superintendent Pedro Martinez said on Tuesday. "He truly is a hero."

Officials also said the boy with the gun was unable to enter the school building, which was crowded with students, because staff followed security procedures.

The two wounded children are expected to recover.

Officials are still working to determine how the boy, who was enrolled at the school, gained access to a semi-automatic handgun.

Police say the boy's parents are co-operating with investigators.

"We have been in contact with the parents of the suspect in this matter and out of respect for them, we will not be releasing the identity of the shooter," Sparks Deputy Police Chief Tom Miller said at a news conference.

"They are grieving parents and are going through a very challenging, difficult time."

When asked if the parents would face charges, Mr Miller said, "That is basically a question for the local prosecutor. But the potential is there."

The incident occurred at 07:15 local time on Monday (14:15 GMT) shortly before the scheduled start of classes.

As many as 200 police officers responded to the scene, authorities said.

(10-23) 09:23 PDT SANTA ROSA -- Sonoma County sheriff's deputies shot and killed a 13-year-old boy Tuesday who was carrying what turned out to be a fake rifle in Santa Rosa, authorities and acquaintances of the boy said.

Andy Lopez died at the scene of the shooting near Moorland and West Robles avenues after being shot while carrying toy gun that belonged to a friend, friends said Wednesday.

The incident began about 3 p.m. when two deputies on patrol saw a "male subject" walking in the area with what appeared to be a rifle, said sheriff's Lt. Dennis O'Leary.

The deputies called for backup and ordered him to drop the rifle, O'Leary said.

"At some point immediately thereafter, the deputies fired several rounds from their handguns at the subject, striking him several times," O'Leary said.

He fell to the ground and "landed on top of the rifle he was carrying," O'Leary said.

Deputies told him to move away from the rifle and handcuffed him, O'Leary said.

The deputies called for paramedics after determining that he was unresponsive, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies determined that the rifle was a "replica of an assault weapon" and that he also had a plastic handgun in his waistband, O'Leary said.

The deputies were placed on administrative leave, which is routine procedure, pending investigations by police and the Sonoma County district attorney's office. Their names were not released.

The incident was the third fatal officer-involved shooting in the Bay Area in less than 24 hours.

On Monday night, Union City police shot and killed a parolee armed with a pipe. Early Tuesday, a San Bruno officer shot and killed a stolen-car suspect who had aimed the vehicle at him, authorities said.
