Last week is was reported that The Killing's Joel Kinnaman was offered the lead role in Jose Padilha's (Elite Squad) Robocop remake. Today Deadline reports that he's accepted the role and the casting is official. Kinnaman will be the new Robocop, and I think it's a great choice to bring Robocop back to life on the big screen. The role was originally played by Peter Weller in 1987.

Here's what Padilha had to say about his plans of the remake in a previous interview,

Wars in the future are going to be fought with drones. We won’t send a plane with a pilot in, it will be drone. It’s getting that way now and ten years from now that’s how wars are going to be fought. But what if a drone goes wrong – who is to blame then? Do you blame the drone? And that problem asks if you can you consider a robot guilty of a crime. Or is it the corporation that made the robot that is guilty? How do you fight back against drones when you don’t have drones?

Joel Kinnaman is a decent actor. Let's hope the storyline is decent.

Now then, with the increases in special effects these days, will this movie take after the original and set the new high bar for being needlessly violent and gory? I damn well hope so. Then again I don't think it can top Red Foreman being a notorious gang leader.

    Question is...

Will we get the guy to fall in the vat of acid and then walk in front of a car and fucking sploosh all over the damn place?

God I hope so. That was an awesome scene. Sadly though I think there going to fuck it up despite Robocop only needing a few simple things. Over the top gore, I'll buy that for a dollar, and hilarious commercials.

If they can do a proper 3D of Murphy getting shot up and such in the beginning of the movie, this movie could possibly be epic. That 1 scene has stood the test of time.

sigh, I really hope this doesn't happen but it probably will, Murphy's hands, the acid/toxic scene, the jugular from the data reader...Hollywood really has its balls chopped off when it comes to movies that's not Final Destination/Saw (which I don't like either of), but seriously when on screen violence that could really add to the story, Hollywood really fails....maybe bad example here but I'm using it anyway, so I was watching The Wolverine the other night (yes it's disappointing but the music made it up for me), I just wish that when he impaled someone with the terrible visual effect claws, there would be some blood remaining on the blade and just something that really adds to the intensity of the fights...but it seems that nowadays Hollywood just wouldn't go there in fear of a R rating kills their box office...

Bullshit, you couldn't see anything that was happening in that movie because it was always so dark.

tbh, I hate gore, and exploding blood everywhere, but it's just that I don't like it when storytelling is hindered by the PG-13 rating...

Looks like we're about to see an on-screen team-up of two of the most successful actors of all time. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Samuel L. Jackson is joining the recently-announced Gary Oldman in Elite Squad director Jose Padilha's upcoming remake of Robocop. The two shared the screen once before in Tony Scott's True Romance.

Oldman plays a scientist who creates the titular cyborg creation from the body of gunned-down cop Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman), and Jackson is playing a "charismatic TV host" named Pat Novak who is "a powerful force in the Robocop world." Sounds like perfect casting to me; Jackson is almost always great when he's required to use that booming voice of his - see Pulp Fiction if for some strange reason you haven't already - and we're willing to let his overly melodramatic performance as The Octopus in Frank Miller's The Spirit slide...this time.

Sucker Punch actress Abbie Cornish may just end up taking on the lead female role in Jose Padilha's Robocop reboot. According to Deadline, she has been offered the role. As of right now there's no word if she's taken it or not, but I don't see why she wouldn't.

She would play the the wife of Joel Kinnaman's (The Killing) character in the story, which follows a police officer who is gunned down and almost killed. He is then turned into a badass robot crime-fighter, who eventually ends up starting to remember his old life as a full human.
