I got a letter like this once from TDS about my brother downloading civ 4 when he owned the game and lost a disc. They sent no follow up notices or anything after that so we were not too worried.

Also, I always use Pirate Bay and have never gotten a notice about anything. Is this more dependent on your ISP or where you get your torrents? What I'm really saying is, how can her dumb ass avoid this again?

I got a notice like this about 4 or 5 years ago. The best part is I didn't even have internet service at the time. I think this whole thing is nothing but scare tactics.

I would say it is and it isn't. I think they don't have the time suing everyone, but that you have just gotten lucky that they haven't picked you from the drawing. They often enough make examples out of people over it, so it could happen. Chances are low though considering just how many people torrent.

@ op I agree with others and tell her to stop torrenting shit. I would say she is the kind of person they do target for actually suing if she doesn't know wtf and is seeding to everybody.

Nothing happens to you persay, but if you get too many of those notices eventually they start to throttle your bandwidth. The amount of notices needed is random though, some people bitch about it after 10+, some after only 2-3. Just use private trackers or stop torrenting until you/sister learn enough about it.

Is there any issues with sites like icefilms and the associated streaming websites (Movreel / 180Upload / BillionUploads) in the US / Canada. Future resident to Canada so just curious and would rather not get tied up in shit like that given i would be on a Visa. Have a private tracker so not too worried there but only considering the likes of these now given this thread was made.

The majority of people who get in trouble for illegal downloads (I say majority, but I think it's everyone -- just to cover my bases, I'm gonna say majority though) are not the people who download, but the people who upload. This is why you hear stories about the stay at home mom with a five year old computer whose daughter downloaded two songs when she was in middle school and is now in trouble for it. These are the people who someone told how to download things, didn't learn anything about the process and laws, know very little about computers, and have essentially been providing this content to others without knowing it for years -- aka, the OP's sister.

As far as I know, watching something on a streaming site is not illegal -- at least not by the letter of the law, but that might just be because the law hasn't caught up yet. That said, and as others have already said, if you're worried about this stuff and don't have any idea what you can do/how to protect yourself, then maybe you shouldn't be downloading things.
