    OUYA: Android based console

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...sole?ref=users

sounds really promising and it seems that they won't have trouble to reach the $950k. at the end, it will all depend on content delivery. heck, I'll probably buy it just to play the ff3 android version on the big screeen

edit: already half through the 5000 available pledges of $99. better be fast if you want to get it for that.

yes, if you want to play angry birds on your tv. deal maker is the price tag of $99 and its potential to totally open up the console gaming market for indie devs. if they can use that potential is another question. there's no question about the demand tho. I created the thread @ 2.2k left of 5k $99 pledges. it's down to 1.8k now.

Yes, in the same way the wild west was a place to see horses.

Which we have $100 Roku boxes for already.

Does Android even have system-level support for controllers, or are they expecting every developer out there to somehow retrofit analog sticks into games that were designed around touch, which equates to a fair majority of the android marketplaces currently?

Will have to see how far the app support goes. Would be another option for Netflixing on the telly if it supports normal android apps.

I think the controller has a track pad for touch. I don't know how well it will work, but still.

Dunno how I'd feel about a trackpad on a controller. Modern Android OS does have mouse-style input support though....

WiiU can get away with it since it's a full fledged touch screen on the controller, so you can see wtf you're touching, rather than dragging a cursor around and then having to hit a button to left/right click.

controllers have a touchpad. my faith is put into the mod (hard- and software) market, since you can do whatever you want with it. worst case scenario, I'll just put emus on it and be happy to not have to bring out my fat ps3 to do the same.

Android has had system-level support for plugging in USB gamepads (and USB stuff in general) since 3.0, and you can use Bluetooth for some as well. Mostly is used for emulators at this point, I think, but the support is there.

I just saw this thread and they must have upped it to 10k. Theres 1400 left and falling (Everytime I hit refresh the number decreases by at least one, without fail). This is very tempting ... must decide quickly.

Edit: Fuck it ... I bit. I hope this thing works out.

We borrowed the free-to-play model from games like League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, Triple Town
Why are they namedropping shit their hardware won't come close to running?

OUYA could change AAA game development, too.
    lol'd

I wish them luck. I hope they get a few good games on there so that folks don't get completely ripped off.

they seem to update the $99 pledge on demand. it's now 20k and already down to 6.6k again. breached $2M. they now are brainstorming what kind of stretch goals they can set. I say USB 3.0, SD slot and more RAM.

@quannum aside the mentioned price, another point is that you can do w/e you want with it without loosing warranty. from a dev point of view, this brings back c64 era where everyone can be a dev for a gaming console. just cheaper, with apps and better graphics (lol).

12 hours later.... 3 million lol.

By the end of 28 days they could fund a game with any endorsement.

Can't decide if I should or not... I haven't received anything from my kickstarters yet, so its like... one more thing? They are already funded so its not like it will never come to market.

I also find their answer to the "will it work overseas" a bit lame... there are different plug types right? Isn't that what the question is really asking? Seems a bit off.

The system only has HDMI output, and HD is an international standard.

Power plug type can often just be a matter of AC adapter or power cord differences. Plenty of devices are 100-240V 50/60hz capable and simply need a plug adapter.

I think the question they're answering is more a matter of region lockout. Since most of what separates their product from other Android based devices would be the XBL/PSN/Steam/whatever style frontend for it (and the standardized hardware), wondering whether it'd prevent non-US based accounts or payment methods seems logical. Sounds like they're building in the capability to restrict things, but not mandating it, which makes sense.

Ah I guess that makes sense too, but the answer isn't very clear. Other projects such as the Nomiku made mention of it so it made me nervous. Apparently in that case they have to replace more than just a plug.
