    Cat drinking dish/fountain

    Greetings,

So to keep it brief, we've had cats for 20+ years and have always used a shallow lipped stainless steel bowel for them to drink water out of. Lately youtube has been spamming me with ads for various cat fountains. "Cats love moving water, yadda yadda". Our boys do love moving water but don't really have any issue with what they're currently using. I was just wondering for those here who use the cat fountain style dishes what's the biggest flaw? I keep coming across motor failure in reviews. Thanks!

It'll probably depend on the brand, I've had a pretty inexpensive one for a good while now from Chewy.

Something like this, and its worked well, Motor runs just fine and hasnt had any problems in the ~2 years I've owned it but I definitely recommend taking it out and cleaning it every so often which I imagine most owners forget to do, especially if you have shedding-heavy cats, because the Motor itself will eventually get hair and stuff in and around it. I've found them super easy to clean though, the one I linked here you can take apart pretty easily, like just pull off like a remote back easy, very convenient.

If it gets too low on water you'll hear the hum of the motor if you're nearby which for someone like me can drive me fucking nuts, but I only hear it when it gets super low which means I'm being dumb and not replacing the water enough. If I had it to do over now that i have more money, I'd probably buy one of the metal ones thats a bit easier to clean but a little more expensive.

If anything its worth noting you will have to buy and replace the filters every so often, so make sure you remember the brand of your Filter and that they have easily find-able and purchasable Filter replacements, and you'll still have to clean it once a week or so to keep it from getting slimy.

But yah, I've had no complaints with mine, this is the second one I've owned, the only reason I replaced the first one is because I lost it during a move, but probably for the better, it was one of the Chinese ones that was impossible to find replacement filters for, so the next one I bought I made sure to buy it from somewhere I order a lot (Chewy) and it had replaceable filters.

Been using the Giotohun 2.2L Stainless Steel Cat Water Fountain for a while without any problems. Most of these will try to sell you filters, but most can operate without any. Anyway, I doubt many people give filtered water to their cat.

Since it's the same one Louis Rossmann uses for his cats, I assume if it ever breaks, we'll have a very comprehensive guide on how to repair it.

I give my cats filtered water because I wear a Monocle daily.

Definitely been our experience here, so we just buy a cheap one with the expectation it'll last a year or two at best, and then replace it.

Don't have a cat currently but will soon. Definitely recommend fountains; my ex has 3 cats and they went nuts for it. Bacteria can build up inside the unit, so wash frequently is my only warning.

just remember to clean the cat hair out of the impeller on the pump and the motor should last years on like 99% of these, though if you get one I do recommend one that’s easy to disassemble for aforementioned hair removal.
