Reports on Twitter and elsewhere suggest NASCAR driver Tony Stewart ran over a competitor, 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr., during an altercation at a sprint car race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park in the Finger Lakes region.

Update (3:05 a.m.): Ward was dead on arrival at the hospital, according to Ontario County Sheriff Philip C. Povero.

After watching the video, it's pretty tough to imply intent. This might just be the end of his racing career though.

Inherent risk of the sport, plus he actively put himself in a situation to be struck. From what I've read they aren't treating it as a criminal investigation. That could change obviously, but it will probably only end up as a wrongful death suit settled out of court.

My thoughts exactly. Why would anyone think running into the middle of a dirt track, at night, in a black racing suit, towards speeding cars, is a good idea?

2-way radios aren't allowed in at least 2 sanctioning bodies of sprint cars, so I doubt there will be anything there. The right rear tire is not the same size as a left rear, there won't be any swapping of those.

I figured he gunned it to move out of the way cause the car in front of him was blocking his vision. I don't think braking would have prevented him from hitting him.
