    CPU too hot?

I have a cheap desktop that's around 6 months old with an i5 4590 and the stock cooler. Started playing dark souls 3 and it's mostly been running fine on high settings with some rare bits of framerate drop, but I noticed the outside of the computer was pretty hot to the touch. I installed a few different programs to check temps, and the CPU seems to be way too hot by what I can gather on google. I was getting like 85-100c on all the cores while in game, like 45-50c idle, and 61-63c in bios(???). I had my brother take it apart, clean out the dust and reseat everything, but the temps are still the same. Fans all seem to work, or at least they are spinning lol.

Never checked temps before today so I'm not sure if it's a new problem or it's been like that since it was built, but I played MGSV previously on it without any issues that I can remember.

Any ideas would be appreciated, I'm retarded when it comes to computer hardware.

When you say reseat, does that include the cpu? Was thermal paste applied? Probably the biggest thing is getting an aftermarket cooler (even though I'm surprised at these temps). Make sure to properly apply thermal paste as well.

My brother reseated the cooler on top of the cpu, but not the CPU itself I think. It actually seems to be running hotter than before, I guess because of doing that without replacing the thermal paste? He ordered some to redo it, but could the stock intel thermal paste job have been that bad to cause the problem in the first place? Is there anything else to check?

I'm sure an aftermarket cooler would be better than the stock one, but would that definitely solve the problem (with new thermal paste)? I mean from what I can gather these temps aren't just slightly high, they are extremely high, and there is something wrong somewhere.

I just hovering around 80c playing hearthstone with a few tabs open in firefox (no videos or anything). Now around 55c with just firefox.

Well if the heatsink was reseated on the CPU without new thermal paste, that's a problem. Another problem is applying too much ... when you redo it, you only want a glob of paste in the middle that's the size of a pea. Just smush it flat with the cooler, and make sure you scrub all the old paste off both the CPU and the heatsink.

Also you need a nominal amount of airflow. Does the case have any fans pulling air inward? I've seen cheap PC's where all the fans are aiming outward... it's like..... wtf?

There is a fan on the top of the case going out, and a fan on the back going in. Even with the case opened up it was in the 60s in the bios (before and after reseating anything), so I'm not sure airflow could be the issue. GPU temp has been fine.

I recently had to replace my i5's stock heatsink with this guy because the pins were not holding the heatsink on the case properly and it was coming loose from the cpu. I ended up having similar or worse temps on my cpu to yours. I would suggest you just buy one of these and pop it on, and you shouldn't have any more issues. CPU never goes over 60c.

A lot of times your cpu can be overheating without any outward signs. In some cases, it can be damaged permanently by high temps. It's better to switch to a good heatsink for 30 bucks than have to replace a $200 processor.

I have an i5 4570, so pretty close to yours, and the temps are usually around 30-35c on idle and ~60 on load. Yours is definitely close to its throttling temp (think it was somewhere around 100c).
The stock coolers are most of the time enough to keep the CPU below throttling temps, but they get VERY noisy... So a 3rd party cooler might be a good investment. tower (blowing sideways) or top-blower (blowing towards the MB) is more of a personal preference.

And to go against the video Kal linked, "pea-sized drop in the center and spread by pressure" is todays recommended way of applying thermal paste since it leaves less room for mistakes and bridges height differences between the cooler and the cpu heatsink better.

Before you apply the new paste, clean the cooler and CPU properly (with alcohol or gasoline) to completely get rid of the old paste.

Just got my new build with a proper CPU fan and the difference in temperature is huge.

New build with proper cooler - 30-32C at rest.

Old build with shitty cooler fan - 50-55C at rest.

Ok I'm gonna try replacing the stock cpu cooler with a hyper 212 (seems to be the most popular recommendation on the net, than silenka linked it again here) with fresh thermal paste and hope that fixes it.

Good choice. Can't go wrong with the either the plus or evo. Just remember, pea size dot in the center of the cpu when applying paste.

What cooler are you using? I'm getting between 20-26c with hyper evo on an amd-8320 during idle and web browsing.

Getting like 30-33c now idle, ~40c in dark souls 3 with the hyper 212 evo and new paste. I guess the stock cooler really was that bad lol. Thanks guys.

Change the CPU cooler and make sure to use good cooling oil when install the cpu cooler or fan.
