    How Not to Rebuttal

    The gist of all of this is that Digital Homicide is a group of "developers" who download Unity assets then resell them on Steam as games they've claimed to made. Last year Jim discovered this and called them out over a few videos. At one point DH filed a DMCA against Jim and had Youtube pull one of the videos down. Then last week DH demanded an interview, which Jim gladly accepted, to tell their side of the story, all of which goes terribly wrong.

    An example of one of their "games;"



    There is actually quite a few people that are doing this, usually selling the Unity assets for $.99 or $1.99 and are turning a good profit. Steam & Unity have thus far been turning a blind eye to the whole thing.

    I've actually been following that since the first incident with Slaughtering Grounds... its pretty damn hilarious. You could probably go to half the Greenlight trailers and see nothing but flipped assets with nothing added...

    As somebody that knows nothing about the situation, Jim Sterling sounds like an asshat in that "interview". He's inarticulate as fuck and he appears to have no idea what the fuck he is talking about. The guy being interviewed clearly had done his homework and Jim seemed to trip over himself multiple times, and never quite understand just why his assertions needed to be grounded in something that wasn't so obvious as to not be explicitly spelled out (if the grounding exist at all).

    Pretty good summation of how bitter and pathetic DH is.

    They also change their Steam name ever so slightly with every release as to avoid having other games appear in their publish history.

    UnitZ the Unity Asset pack has appeared on Greenlight at least a dozen times now completely unaltered. Also Unity has no intention of taking any action against this.

    It's an entertainment persona he's adopted. I may not agree with all of the views Jim Sterling publicly espouses, and his videos often beat a dead horse when it comes to certain topics, but damn if he isn't on the right side about most of these things. The idea that LPs/reviews do anything but help sales, even when the games are terrible, is laughable.

    He says a bit more than that.

    He argued that what he does isn't all that different, in terms of of effort, from what Jim Sterling does.

    I don't know about DH's games and I don't know much about game development but I think that's a somewhat reasonable point. The guy may make crappy games but that doesn't mean he should be depicted as lazy and dishonest. Using Unity assets does not mean there wasn't any work put into making the game.

    Most importantly Jim never gave a response to this.

    He doesn't make games at all. He purchases or grabs free assets from Unity then resells them on Steam.

    According to DH his games do have code he wrote. He says in the interview that he is not one of those who have been completely relying on unity assets.

    I think Jim even agrees on him on this or at least doesn't bother arguing him over this point.

    This is a fairly crucial point and if Jim thinks otherwise he should have fought him on it. He shouldn't be lumped in with those who are just slapping together free assets if he is actually doing some work.

    I kinda agree? The games are still below shit tier with effort/programming going into them that I learned in a day of Youtube videos. Plus its more about the meltdown than the product itself, though the product itself is laughable asset flipping with minimal effort given crap. What I mean by that is his slaughtering grounds game, the game that started it all, had ammo that, when picked up, would give ammo to the gun equipped, because he could not or didn't think to add different ammo types for the 4 different guns he put in all with different ammo... he simply added a universal type that instead of working for all guns, thus sharing ammo, he instead made it that you have to equip a gun with no ammo and find ammo to pick up to get ammo for that gun. Like i said, crap tier programming.

    So, not that I disagree he shouldn't be lumped in the exact same level as those who just legit asset flip like that Zombie Z whatever asset pack, he is 0.2% better than those people. Nil to minimal effort goes into his asset flipping.

    This whole ordeal is less about the game/developer itself and more the catastrophic meltdown that followed because of Jims "Squirty Play" of Slaughtering Grounds. If you felt you could argue they're both in the wrong but theres no denying that the developer is trash tier and seems to think because he spends a saturday coding bad gun mechanics in a "game" with store-bought assets and nothing original its worth 20$. If i had the balls to release one of my RPG maker or Unity games I'd at least make it free knowing full well it isn't worth money. Neither are his games, and thats essentially what Jim said... and then the developer flipped the fuck out and went full retard. Thats where this all began.

    I'm interested in seeing what direction this takes. Personally I think he's ran his name through the mud by releasing wave after wave of hack low effort games, some of which are literally the same game with different assets, Jim has just shined a flashlight on their shittery.
