A Civ game is a Day 1 game for me but yeah, there is a trend against deep strategy games and simulations recently and I really really hope Civ doesn’t go down that route and end up giving us a watered down strategy game. Firms should realize that appealing 100% to a smaller group of players is always better than 10% to a larger one.

feel Civ got lapped in a lot of respects re deeper strategy games by the Paradox revolution which has popularized grand strategy to an unprecedented degree and are a lot more complex than anything Civ ever offered.

bit of an awkward place for them i feel. they're not going to drop anything as complex as Paradox and the lighter, broader strategy format doesn't really appeal to the oldheads. need to thread the needle which is a lot easier said, Humanity and Old World both mostly failed. if i had to guess they'll stick with the broad approach, Civ VI didn't do anything for me but it was the best selling game in the series so $$$$$$$

Yeah Paradox games are entirely of a different kind. I think a serious contributor to their success is the mind blowing historical accuracy of the games.

This makes them extremely appealing to anyone that is remotely interested in history. Its the closest videogame to an encyclopedia. Its not a route CIV can or should follow.

They don't have to have paradox-level of simulation, but at least make the game look somewhat realistic. I don't need Heart of Iron, and I don't want it, but I also don't want the game to look like it was designed from the ground up to be played casually from a tablet on a lazy Thursday evening in-between Netflix commercials.

Use Unreal Engine or something; just give me something that looks 2024 and somewhat realistic.

As a casual fan. What sets this so apart from VI and more like the previous games?

oh it's mostly hopium at this point. the art style looks a lot better and a return to older form, stuff like navigable rivers, different elevations, and mix-n-match leaders with civs look fire, but wait and see re more in depth gameplay

also that's fuckin Brienne as the narrator lmao. joins Ned in the franchise

I really liked the new art style as well. VI wasn't bad, series has always been a day 1 buy for me, I don't even give a crap about reviews but vanilla indeed had a "let's also please casual gamers" vibe on it.
Could've been because of the limitations of tablets back then as it is a strong revenue source for CIV (for me a wonderful companion especially during days long remote layovers). With silicon processors thankfully it'll no longer be an issue.

Really can't wait. So far they seem to be hitting all the right buttons. At this point, with developers experience this game cannot suck, it can only be less great.
