Anyone still play these? Picked up the Gradius collection for PSP it's really good. Some vital shmups are definately R-Type III, Einhander, Rayforce, Phalanx, Axelay, Ikaruga, and Dodonpachi.

Clean Asia is an amazingly good game. It's got a few design flaws IMO, but for free, it's a damn good way to kill time.

I am playing R-Type Delta right now.. it's actually pretty cool to see the 3-D transition.

I'd have to say my all time favorite is Einhander.. damn this game is just so good. The OST is perfect, gameplay is almost flawless. Sure it gets ridiculously hard sometimes.. but very fun.

No not really, great game but not really. Remember kids tough does not always = fun. It's a great game, but it's weaksauce compared to some others.

I agree. I'll take a Gigawing game over Ikaruga any day.

EDIT: If the previously mentioned Mitzuguchi games can be considered SHMUPS, then Rez wins for being my personal favorite game of all time.

Ive been playing gradius v for about a month now, working my way through it. Im definatly rusty as fuck but my reflexes are coming back. I should hopefully beat it and get the weapon mode unlocked soon, then I can enjoy the game. Up to 10 hours for the credit system.. I hope I dont have to enter free play to beat it ; ;

Einhander is fun, but I suck at shooters, and I can't get past stage 4 when it gets really really hectic. I had my friend come over and beat the game for me so I could see the ending (those bastards!).

I have R-type Delta, since I found it for very cheap and knew it was about as hardcore as a game could be, and I would get very much street cred for owning it (and I planned to get into it at some point). I think I played maybe halfway through the first level before I picked up something else instead.

The only shooter I ever beat was Life Force on NES, using the Konami Code. The escape sequence after the final boss still seems to me like something that would be just fucking impossible to do and not die.
