Good, cheap hosting service with SQL and CGI (or PHP)?

Anyone know of a good, reliable, cheap hosting service that provides SQL and cgi (or php if i have to)?

Basically, I'd use it to play around with, make use of SQL and cgi or php, host web pages utilizing said functions, etc.

I wouldn't expect a lot of traffic, though there would be some. Just what you might get from posting a link here, at the most.

I am most familiar with perl cgi (I haven't done much programming of this sort lately so I never learned php or other languages), though if everything out there now is mostly SQL/php then I suppose I could always learn.

Either way, there's a ton of services out there and just wondering if anyone had any experiences with any of them to recommend any?

And by reliable, I mean not down all the time and responsive support to get things that I need set up (like SQL, perl, php, ftp or whatever I might need on there).

And to any admins of any site, how do you go about directly viewing, modifying, or creating your SQL tables? Do you have a shell account to access it via telnet so you can type your queries directly, or is it a built in web interface these days? I haven't had hosting and actively done web programming in years, so I bet a lot has changed. lol

I think the last time I actually had hosting was before 2000...

Thanks. Either of you have experience with those providers? I can search for the services myself easily enough, but figured I would ask here in case anyone had any favorable (or unfavorable) experiences with any of them.

Like msot every other provider, if you ask them for "help" to do something it'll be about 1 day before any response, other then that it seemed fine.

I only changed from that host because my website does like 14+ GB a day transer and with that hosting company it would cost like $50 a day to run my site.

The lowest plan internetturnpike offered that fit the requirements is $1/month cheaper than the minimum plan on dreamhost (with 2 year signup, its $3 cheaper otherwise).

Since I want SQL, the lowest qualifying plan on internetturnpike is the Starter 2 $6.99/mo plan. The lowest qualifying plan on dreamhost is the Crazy Domain Insane $7.95/mo plan. Despite the name, the dreamhost one looks much much better.

    Compare "Starter 2" from http://www.internetturnpike.com/plans.html

    with

    "Crazy Domain Insane" from http://dreamhost.com/hosting.html

Is there something I'm missing? Why, for about the same price, does internetturnpike offer 1GB storage, 50GB transfer, 5 email and FTP accounts (not that that matters to me), and perl/php/SQL, yet dreamhost offers 172GB storage, 1.72TB bandwidth, 3000 email and 75 FTP accounts (not really a big deal), and perl/php/SQL plus other miscellaneous features?

    I mean.. 1 GB vs 172GB, 50GB vs 1.72TB, and only a $3/mo difference in price ($1/mo with 2-year signup).

Is there something I'm not aware of?

because with plans like dreamhost... they usually dont offer you 172GB of space.... for yourself... instead its shared amongst everyone on that server... if you think about it you cant get 172GB on a single server that you advertised as shared get such a low price, and put one ore 2 people on it and expect to stay in business... its a shared thing... trust me... the other one is straight up with you "you have this much space and this much bandwidth".

the thought behind places like dreamhost is that the typical person wont use 172GB of space... (heh i should>.>) and they wont run into a problem...

i could probably provide you with some space on my server... that i run in my house... but you wouldnt have a fancy web gui or anything...

yes, very true but the way their system works is so nice and i'm sure as long as you're using the space reasonably and nothing shady, I doubt they will be coming to knock on your door.

Is either internetturnpike or dreamhost any more or less reliable than the other? It's kind of funny the way the present their plans so differently from each other, however dreamhost still seems a bit better because they don't lock you in to a set limit, they just assume people won't generally (collectively) go above it. But then again, that may be a bad thing if everyone else abuses it.

http://www.1and1.com supports all those, no down time ever (seen my site down once in 3 years, for 5 minutes), has fast customer support via email/phone, really cheap, etc.
As for a SQL front-end, pretty sure I can safely say phpMyAdmin is one of the best ones out there for MySQL.

well... both are good, I've had a few "slow/downtimes" with dreamhost but they fix it fast.

Additional Requirement: Looking for the same PHP and SQL, also would like some form of version control alla CVS or SVN.

I'm not aware of many webhosts that support these, but I'm sure there are a few out there, but I have yet to find a 'reliable' one.

BTW as of 3/12/07 http://www.datamachine.net looks like:

BTW, I'm currently using GoDaddy.com for my source. They are pretty cheap and I have had little down time since I switched to them last year. They support both PHP and MySql or for a little more they support Windows interfaces instead of Nix.

I coulda sworn dreamhost had some cvs-type dealie... I actually use them, but partially cos a friend works there. If you go with dreamhost, make sure you pick up one of those coupon code things... think I ended up paying like 10 bucks for the year.

i use netfirms and they are trashy but cheap.

I paid 10 bucks for the year, 2 free domain registrations for 1 year (checked terms and conditions, they are not registered in-lieu or any shenanigans) with the following features:

    250 MB Storage
    2 GB Transfer
    PHP/CGI/Perl/MySQL/Wordpress/etc
    500 e-mail

Netfirms totally sucks but its 10 bucks a year, perfect for testing and a couple free domain registrations. You have to go through some annoying hoops to cancel (which i have to do in a few months) but its perfect for what I use it for (basically the same: testing, email, hosting images, etc.)

link to current deal (expires 4/30) http://www.netfirms.com/pcmag7

discussion if you want to see how bad it is lol Netfirms flames

edit: i got the exact same deal that is running currently but i did it back in 6/06. forgot to mention it has ssh and uses a custom web-based control panel. Also phpMyAdmin for the databases (which i have gotten used to)
