    FFXI Starter Package

Looking at the anime expo page I thought this was kind of interesting.
    http://na.square-enix.com/ffxi/ax2007/starterpack.html

A WoW-esque, trial CD for FFXI for $3.00. Comes with an... easel? For some ass reason, but it has Dark Rider on it so it looks pretty damn cool.

No idea why it's called an easel, but does look cool, yeah.

Probably a pencil board http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclo ... .php?id=88, common thing to see as anime/game merchandise.

Yeah, that's what I had been thinking, too. Poor translation, I guess.

It's a crappy translation, but in one of the images you can see that it's just a poster printed on boxboard that has a fold-out prop/stand. It's really similar to marketing POP materials game stores like EB have on the cash wrap or taped to the top of their 2-ways.

How is the trial working? Default game + 1 free month? Do you have to buy the game again if you want to continue, or just need the expansion.

Bit of a bump. The Starter package was released today, here's the website:

    Costs $3.99

I tried to order it from Gamespot, but it wouldn't accept my credit card. Eh, I doubt my computer can run FFXI anyway, I got something like 3000 on the benchmark system (if that means anything).

This might be a good alternative to re-installing FFXI with all my old CD/DVDs. :D

I thought about this but I think the disk might only include up to RoZ. I imagine that SE will release another collection after WotG comes out like they have with past expansions.

    Re: FFXI Starter Package

No the disc includes all expansions so far. The unknown factor is how much purchasing the online codes for expansion packs will be. Of course if your using it simply as a handy reinstall disc its not bad.

PlayOnline Launches Expansion Pack Registration Code Sales! (07/23/2007)The “Expansion Pack Registration Code Sales” service is a feature available for FINAL FANTASY XI players who have expansion packs installed on their machine, but have not activated them due to not having the registration codes. Through this feature, you now will be able to purchase registration codes to unlock expansion software that is already installed on your machine. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS SERVICE WILL NOT ENABLE A DIRECT DOWNLOAD OF ANY EXPANSION PACK SOFTWARE.

Basicly you get the game FFXI and have to pay for RoZ/CoP/ToAu. If you already have them you dont need to register.

    Re: FFXI Starter Package

    http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/topics ... egist.html

    Purchasing the registration codes costs:
Rise of the Zilart - 9.99
    Chains of Promathia - 9.99
Treasures of Aht Urhgan - 14.99

So if you were to buy the starter pack (3.99) and all reg codes to go with it, you would pay about $39. This is rather... weird, since the current store buyable all-in-one pack is $20 and includes the reg codes.

It seems like this is useful for two kinds of people: someone on PS2 who can't find a copy of CoP, or ToAU, or someone who doesn't mind needlessly overpaying for a product.

Other than that it seems like it's only handy as a cheap, easy to use reinstall disc for people who already own expansion reg codes.

Starter Disc is PC only from what I'm see'ing here.

Anyways, I don't see why SE just doesn't digitally distribute the damn game for PC at this point, it's almost standard for all MMORPGs to do that nowadays anyhow, but I guess they're too cheap for the bandwidth and would rather have people torrent the ISOs instead.
