    Extreme Lag on College Campus

sup guys, i had this same problem last year and got around it by using a dial up connection, but this year the dial up sucks too so i turned to you.
on my school's broadband cable connection my roommate is able to play World of Warcraft without any server lag. I, on the other hand, suffer fierce lag of gargantuan proportions while trying to play FFXI. the time it takes between sending a /tell to myself and then recieving it is anywhere from 5 to 8 seconds. the same goes for anything else i do; Engage a mob, cast a spell, toss a item, use an ability. even zoning takes forever.

my question is have any of you experienced this problem or know how to fix it? my "Diagnose Connection Problems" option in Internet Explorer detect that there is little to no communication through the FTP ports. does FFXI run primarily off these ports and if so, is there a script that can be written to change that?

any help would be appreciated. my AIM screenname is NinjazKillPeople

Regarding port ranges, FFXI has a massive range; something like almost 20,000 ports can be utilized by FFXI. You may be unlucky and the ports your FFXI client is using to connect to regional server hubs or whatnot are on blocked or restricted hubs at your school.

the problem you face right now, if i'm not mistaken the S point is below 100 is that correct?
may i know also is there any router in your house, where your friend's pc and your pc connect to it to get internet connection?

from my experience, it happened to me when my housemate abuse sharing programs, by download multiple files at one time. i am very sure that your friend's wow won't affect the internet. i had cox cable dsl (7mbps) before and i asked my housemate if their internet is slow. but they said no. one more that i can thing is, the isp is kinda slow. currently i use dsl connection. so when i see my S is slow and confirmed no one use computer or internet in the house other than me (of course i don't use sharing program at that time), i will check on my modem's user interface and see the downstream value. there i can see the value decrease to 300kbps for example. my max downstream is 1024kbps for now.
