    Anti-Virus Software suggestions

Anyone have any recommendations for the best/most effective anti-virus software out there? I have always used Norton since it was what came with my first computer which was from Gateway years back. However i'm curious how it compares to other anti-virus software.

Any suggestions? Doesn't matter to me whether it is freeware or requires a purchase/subscription.

I use avast, they have a free version out there i think or a pro version (which you can find a keygen for off torrent sites), its always worked well for me.

Norton is awful, it uses a lot of resources and it's not the best thing around in terms of detection, besides, it likes to spam you with reminders to pay to Symantec. It could qualify as adware or even malware.

There are much better options around, like AVG or Avast, which are less expensive to free.

I personally use NOD32. It's quite professional, effective and resource efficient.

Symantec can depend really. If you're talking about going out and buying the retail box, then yeah, it can be annoying. The corporate version is a bit different, so if you have access to that it may be more attractive to use. Tends to be customized so it's far less intrusive.

AVG and Clamwin are some good free packages though.

AVG's free software is very good. Constant updates, it's free, very easy to install, it's free, and it's very easily customized (turning off pop ups, etc).

AVG is what I've used, never had a virus while running it.

Symantec Corporate Edition gets my vote, it has a much more streamlined interface and is not a resource hog like it's Norton counterpart.

I used Avast awhile ago, but the free version doesn't let you set up scheduled scans and the control panel isn't as extensive as I'd want it to be. Go with the pro version if you can get your hands on a key if you're going with the "I want free anti-virus!" route.

+1 for Symantec Corporate, it's what Norton should have been.

Avast! does have scheduled scan capability, however it shines for the web detection/ aggressiveness for detection. Updates are constant and automatic. Pricewise, free for a legit copy = happy me.

Of course, having a secure network setup would help as well

Symantec sucks as of lately, regardless of that my list would be: in no particular order

    - Symantec or McAffee if they remove all the bloatware included with the antivirus
    - NOD32
    - Kaspersky
    - AVG
    - Avast

The stand alone corporate Symantec AV is hands down the best if you have access to it.

Most AV packages now come with all sorts of other shit that eat up computer resources, regardless of manufacturer. AVG is a good free antivirus app without the extra "Protection".

Honestly your best bet is just smart internet use. If your a person that goes and clicks on any free hot college girl porn adds or opens the attachments that come with spam email, you are always going to have problems regardless. I guess the point is, all AV programs can be overcome by a stupid end user or intuitive hack, regardless of how well the AV is designed.

If your strictly looking for a low cost, low overhead, no bullshit AV that works, go with AVG (or SAV corp if you or an acquaintance has access to it).

I just switched from Nod32 to Avast! because Nod kept screwing with my bit torrent clients. All is well now though.

Do Avast! and AVG play well together? or is one much better than the other?

Pretty sure this is no. Companies contact Symantec by phone, and they send out all the stuff for it. It's expensive stuff, because most of the time companies purchase it to protect their entire network, and it includes management consoles, special software and instructions to manage an AV server, and stuff like that. As far as I know, they do not just sell the Corporate AV client. I got mine through my university, and it still works on any PC I install it on. I guess that's because the school would rather shell out the cash so all students can have good AV protection. Anyway, you have to find someone who has a unlicensed client available. I have no idea if you can torrent this sort of thing but it's worth a shot I guess, it's probably the best AV software out there if you can get your hands on it.

I've used Norton forever and haven't had any resource-hogish problems that I can remember. Anything by Symantec (Corporate or not) gets my vote.
