Death by counter = no drops?

Was helping a friend get Dune Boots and the NM was defeated by a counter of mine (double KO if that helps). The log shows a punch after the counter, but that happened to be lag and happened in the opposite order if my memory serves me correctly. Now being defeated by the counter, it says the NM killed itself and did not drop anything, even though Dune boots is a 100% drop.

On top of that we didn't even get the gil that it drops either for kiling it.

Edit: GM said they can't do anything but report the glitch. It wasn't a lost item, but instead an item that never existed so they could not restore it

I think it's because it "defeated itself", the counter only caused no drops because it was a double KO

Simply put, your pt didnt kill the mob. I guess the way the game is coded is that any counter dmg or returned spike dmg is not considered dmg done by the PC, but instead the enemy hitting themselves.

Re: Death by counter = no drops?

I dont think it has to do with counter directly but the fact that he died at the same time as the mob dying. or a combination of both

you know like the glitch where killing a mob with mijin can cause you to lose the drops?

I think if he were alive he may have gotten the drop. but who knows anyone wana do some tests? lol

this may lead to some interesting discoveries

Nope, the mob killing "itself" is why. You can die to a mob at the same time and still get drops as it doesn't become unclaimed for a tad.

So now the question is, if the mob killed itself, did the mob get Dune Boots?

    Was he wearing Rasetsu?

If he countered the NM, he wouldn't have died. If he died, he wouldn't have countered.

It's possible that he got hit, spikes proc'd, and died - while the spikes killed the NM.

There is a pic in Ladyofhonor's sig, which says "Ladyofhonor was defeated by Ladyofhonor." - I forget how it happened, but I'm 95% sure it had to do with spikes.

looks like just a game glitch to me, as long as it doesn't happen on big kills all is good.

Re: Death by counter = no drops?

Why would you fight it this way anyway?

Grab yourself a SMN and an RDM/NIN in enmity gear to blinktank it. Make sure the RDM lands Sleep. Have the SMN use Bloodpacts on it, Chaotic Strike is good for the stun effect to prevent the NM from hitting the avatar if it pulls hate.

Bailarina doesn't build TP this way, so long as the RDM hold hate over an avatar, so there's no nasty double/triple 1000 Needles to contend with.

It's not exactly a hard NM anyway... so just bring some friends and wail on it.

    No, this can happen.

Attack rounds always happen in full, so if you are determined to attack three time those three will go off even if you die during the course of delivering them.

The simplest explanation is that the Sabo had a normal two attack round, one of which killed the MNK, the other was countered which killed it. Since the MNK died in that encounter the game's programming doesn't allow it to kill the mob, and since the counterattack is not a direct attack from the MNK, it just records it as it killing itself. This could easily be fixed by assigning the counters always to the player, but for some reason it is not.

For some reason I picture someone throwing their fist out, and then snapping it back in and punching themselves in the nose.

Ya, when I got my boots I'd been told it could be tricky, engaged with a balanced party of 6, no bard, destroyed it like an xp mob.

kill it in daytime so it has 1 more TP move, and it's cake. 1000/6*3=500 a head per TP move. nasty, but how much worse is that than a nasty cursed sphere, really? as far as NMs go, it's rather timid, really.
