Apologies in advance for wall-o-txt.
Backstory: some guy was kinda notorious for stealing peoples' stuff on Sylph this essay was written by our very own Linkthedeme or as hes commonly known now; Carus.
Enjoy.
"Throughout life a person probably encounters many deviant people. However how close the person is to you varies from one individual to another. This person was once I would say my best friend I knew until he chose me and a few others as his targets. Before I could realize it was too late thankfully the damage done was not too severe. He is currently about the age of nineteen and is a Hispanic-American. He is a pretty notorious thief known to people all over the world from anywhere to Asia to Europe and this is contributed to the fact that he is a thief that steals from people over the internet.
This person is clearly deviant based on the views of deviance. In the legal statute view what he is doing is against the law because he is stealing from people who are way too trustworthy of people over the internet. What he does he knows is wrong and he once said “I know what I do is wrong but business is business” which satisfies the self view portion of the views of deviance. Statistically it is against the norm because the majority of people normally do not steal thus putting him in a minority deviance. Finally the absolute and immoral view follow this person’s actions completely because evil is in the nature of the act.
This individual is deviant as a whole because it does not matter how close an individual is to him if he sees a point in benefiting then he will take advantage of it. He takes anything he can get his hands on then lies and blames someone else or just cuts off all ties to the person. Since everything is done over the internet there are very limited things that can be done to prevent and apprehend him. The internet has many scapegoats limiting the number of ways to catch someone because of its vast anonymity.
The labeling theory shows that people act the way they do because they are labeled with that stereotype. In his case this may be why the reason he is as malicious as he is now. The reason I say this is because the differential association ties into this, rather it is the starting point. He used to hang out with people who did this very commonly so as time grew on he was labeled in being a part of those actions when he was not. So as a result he had the stereotype already and the resources and information on how to do it because of the people he hung out with so as a result he eventually evolved into a small thief. After that he became his own independent monster because he broke away from his friends and ended up stealing from them as well. After that is when he came into contact with me and seemed to have settled down for quite some time.
This is when Merton’s adaptation to the modes of anomie starts to kick in. The culture’s norms of what constituted success started to change. He followed with conformity for quite a bit but when he could not use the legitimate means anymore he fell back on his old lifestyle. He was an innovationist because he accepted the goals but had to use his old means on getting to the goals he was trying to obtain. He used the ritualism to just do whatever he wanted without having to think of what happens in the end of the whole deal. He follows the retreatist part, because in the end he separated himself from the goals and means of society and ended up by himself. The rebellion also comes into play because he does not agree with the goals and means after retreating from them and then started his own goals and means to follow.
There are many different ways to punish someone with this case of deviance. The easiest way to punish him is to have everything he cherishes just taken away from him which would be following the retribution portion. In the deterrence perspective, threaten to call the police and notify authorities if he takes action again. The social protection would have him be arrested so that the possibility of him doing an offense again would be eliminated. Finally, the rehabilitation punishment would have him resocialize to reduce him trying to steal again. That is what I at least tried to accomplish but failed.
Overall, this case of deviance is the most extreme that I have seen from first hand experience in my lifetime. The damage that he has done to people has been nerve wrecking for the past three years. I only hope that people wise up and start protecting themselves more carefully. What worries me most is that he is still out there probably committing the same crime even now. "
Personally, i found this too good to pass up the opportunity of posting. Depending on replies i might need to add some more backstory this itself was pretty self explanatory.
