    Pokemon Platinum is coming!

Info is from serebii and Neogaf, plus the latest Corocoro, Japan's Pokemon mag of choice. here's what I could gather.

    Fall 2008 release in Japan.
    Giratina is on the cover.
Giratina, Regigigas and Shaymin all have new "forms" like Deoxys does. Regigigas is said to have a "sky" form and Shaymin a "winter" form.
    New Electric gym leader.
    New costumes for main character.
    Underground is now Wifi.

and some other very minor details with a lot more info promised this summer. Fall 2008 probably means an early release of it next year in the US. I hope they make it a bit faster in game speed but do want regardless.

If they make it so I can find something other than water pokemon, geodudes, and zubats in the first half of the game, I might actually play this one.

I have to admire Nintendo. It is quite a feat to be able to release a game over and over again with basicaly the same core and still have millions buy those games. It's so obnoxiously brilliant!

    Re: Pokemon Platinum is coming!

I really enjoyed the first Mystery Dungeon. A very different spin on the old horse, throws out a lot of the convoluted stat system (since there isn't really competative fighting you can just load down on gummis to raise your stats to extreeeeeme), and best of all, with a couple of codes you get online to fill in the version-specifics, you could get literally every 3rd generation pokemon -- including ones like deoxys, mew, and celebi.

Well, I thought MD:Explorers was a pretty safe bet. Whew. You remember how everyone thought Megaman BN was a nice fresh retake on Megaman? And then they released 6+ essentially identical games? That's Mystery Dungeon. They actually took a step BACKWARDS by limiting previously-unlimited Kanga storage space and making the stuff you put in there not stack. In return they give more in-dungeon carrying space, but it's still retarded. Instead of your save point being right in front of the path to the dungeons, now you have to go through the entire guild (past job postings, superfluous extra pokemon adjustment station, and an entirely pointless top hut thing), then down some stairs, to get to the dungeons.

The gameplay and graphics are exactly the same; the only differences are number and arrangement of pokemon, different (more) TMs, and a new system of items that give miniscule enhancements to specific evolution trees, which have to be acquired from random chest drops in the dungeons and which ID randomly -- I have approximately 80 of them, and can thusfar use two. Of course, I only use my two starter pokes, as more pokemon = more reviver seeds you need to carry for when the AI screws you.

The story is a step backwards, too. Instead of the independant self-reliant rescue team from the first game, you and your partner are recruits in a guild. There have been at least 4 different fights where I've SOUNDLY beaten the crap out of opponents the story built up to be ass-kicking, only to have the game promptly tell me that despite my horrifically brutal victory, I didn't really beat the enemy superpokemon, it in fact beat the crap out of me. This cliche needs to die.

...Despite all of these facts, I'm still playing the hell out of this game. The actual dungeon system is pretty well done, and once you get to a certain point in the game (beating the main story) you can (if the first is any indication) switch out your starter pokes and go solo in dungeons, and then still have tons of sidequests and extra dungeons to beat. At this point, as in the first MD, I plan to toss aside my two starters and start leveling a ghost pokemon.

For those interested in MD but who haven't played it, ghost pokemon are ultrahax. They can walk through dungeon walls, and actually sit at the edge of a wall next to a non-ghost pokemon and just relentlessly attack without any ability by the opponent to counter. Almost nothing but other ghosts can hit you in the wall. It kind of makes legendaries look dumb. But it can be fun to have one for those times when you're frustrated at your 15,000th monster house where one poke spammed Agility, the other hit you with def down, and the 300 others hit you for 6 damage each, taking you down from 300hp to 0 before you could move (which was a problem in the first one too, but fewer pokes used agility in that; i only distinctly recall skarmory).

It's certainly a more rewarding experience, in my eyes and for my time, than the main PokemonP/D titles. And I doubt I'll bother with Platinum, unless I hear that it eliminates said geo/bat problem.

I don't wanna buy a DS game where I can't walk diagonally...I don't think it should even be allowed to make a game that can't perform such task on that kind of hardware.

That's like not being able to jump on a PS2 ga-

Although if the usual thing with third games happens here, (at least it happened with Emerald) there will be plenty of nice new things for competitive Pokemon players. And for all the people in this topic hoping that there might be any significant changes in this version... where have you been for the past 10 years? The third game will include a few new moves (and by new moves, I mean Pokemon learning old moves they couldn't get in D/P) a Battle Tower and a pallette swap. Oh, and maybe they'll slap one of the gym leaders into the E4 again.

Yep. Despite the haterade being passed around, I actually look forward to these games for those simple facts. As much as I'd like some thing to be changed (HM moves suck, I'd like more options than just being a rookie trainer, ect ect) I also can't blame them for not fixing a tried and true formula. I mean seriously, this is Nintendo we are talking about. If they ever made a *real* console version or MMO-style game, then I could see more complaining about new and diverse stuff, but the Pokemon handheld games have a very touchy fanbase, and really, they need to be kept "simple" for the younger set to enjoy. They are marketed for them, as much as I wish there were more mature-themed versions of the games. You've got to work with what you have or just leave it alone if it's not for you I suppose.

I was truly and utterly shocked this generation when Waterfall actually became awesome due to the physical/special split and suddenly Surf wasn't the only good HM anymore.

Of course Surf and Waterfall are exempt. Now, Defog, Cut, Strength, Fly, Rock Smash and Rock Climb.......it would be nice if they could be used as Key Items if there was a Pokemon capable of using the move with you, with the option to learn it.
