    Generic part-time jobs

Anyone have one of those, here? You know, like fast food, retail, grocery, etc.

What kind of job do you have, and is it fun and relaxing or hellish and made of fail?

I have a friend that got a part-time job on weekends just to kill time, and at first I thought it sounded like a lot of work. But now I'm kind of curious. I might get a little something on the side just for the experience and to keep busy.

So for those of you with jobs of this nature, tell me about them!

Bettter to get one doing something like data entry for a post office, that kind of crap.

Working fast food sucks, 90% of the people that are your bosses are literally stuck there because they're just plain stupid, and the other 10% are so fed up of dealing with the retarded ones they're just gonna be dicks to anybody.

I remember one time when we actually felt bad, because this manager was just giving the stupidest fucking directions ever, and this guy goes "dude wtf are you retarded?!" And then yeah she started crying because she was, in fact, partly retarded. But we couldn't really feel that bad, because she would give stupid orders constantly and then be a complete bitch about it.

Meh, anyway, I suggest staying away from the jobs where failures go to try to salvage some kind of career, it's just not fun working for/with people that hate their jobs, not to mention it's usually dirty busywork crap.

Worked part time throughout most of college. My most entertaining job was working retail for banana republic, because pretty much everyone else there was a college student, and the managers were pretty cool (most of them anyways).

I did have an administrative assistant position for an office doing random stuff like data entry, excel spreadsheets, filing...but despite paying $14/hr, it was boring as fuck because they restricted internet access, and they could never give me enough work to keep busy during my time there each day. It got annoying having to ask for something to do every hour or two. Eventually quit because it became too tedious and it started to mess with my school schedule as well.

Probably a good idea from that perspective, though I stare at a computer all day as it is. I was hoping to do something different on the weekend. lol

Delivery is pretty cool if you like the idea of cruising around listening to music for most of your day. Maybe not pizza delivery, but I've worked delivery auto parts from a dealership before and it was pretty cool. I was kind of a jack-of-all trades there (excluding repairs/service) though, so it's not all I did.

If you like outdoorsy stuff and can handle manual labor, there might be part time positions with parks&rec, the country, etc. I've done county work involving mainly trail maintenance 'n stuff.

Libraries are good too. Putting books back and shelf reading can get overly monotonous at times, but again music is your friend and hopefully you can get a job where that's not all you do. Shifting and rearranging projects are pretty good, and circulation desk seems like a breeze with a computer to kill time on.

Golf Course for the summer. It's hot (i guess depending where you live), but it's nice to not have to drive to the course after work

I made bank delivering pizzas in a college town, but I also worked until 5-6am every night. Unfortunately it ended with my boss being retarded, trying to make a smartass comment to me at the Christmas party, getting clowned and not scheduling me anymore lol. Good ole wounded pride, great reason to fire your best worker.
(One of my roommates got in a fight at my work so he banned all my roommates from coming.
boss: "Can I come over to your house and start a fight and not get kicked out?
me: "no I'll kick you out but I won't kick your wife out.")

You could consider working for someplace like the DAV, or volunteering at the Salvation Army or something. Not much for money that way but great to have on your resume.

There's also temp agencies, and if you know your way around a brake system and an exhaust system and you're 18, you can always get a job at Rapid or Midas or something. And then there's always just good old fashioned oil changing.

My brother used to work at a car dealership doing auto cleaning and detailing. He basically cleaned up all the cars after they first arrived and before they left the lot. It was a bit of a laborous job but I know he liked it a lot. He was also able to buy a new car from them at cost and with 0% financing through the dealers financing company which was a very nice perk.

Oh yeah, I knew a bunch of kids in Kansas City that worked at a Turtle Wax car wash, there were like 8 of them that all knew each other and they all sat around getting high all day and loved it heh.

Lots of crap to steal with big ole signs that say "IF YOU LEAVE YOUR SHIT IN YOUR CAR WE'RE GOING TO STEAL IT AND YOU CAN'T DO SHIT ABOUT IT" too lol...

Kham, when I was a teen I worked at a supermarket, and I loved it. I really did it more for killing time than earning money. I just put it all into savings. If I could make what I make now as a software engineer just stocking shelves and bullshitting with customers I'd do it in a heartbeat. Kept me in shape too from running around and lifting things all day.

Christmas rush was always a fun time too. I've often considered seeing if I could go back part time to just futz around but I'm sure they wouldn't take me seriously if they knew I had a fulltime job as a programmer.

Plus...I worked in the dairy/frozen department so I was eating all the food back in the coolers all day. Was fucking awesome. Bartered with other departments. Those were the days.

Volunteering is an option, but I don't really need it for my resume. Nothing I do part-time on the weekend will have any bearing on my career, as I doubt the next engineering firm I work for will care whether I volunteered at Salvation Army.

I just want a bit of social diversity and to get away from the desk, since my full-time job during the week is all about sitting at a desk and working with the same few co-workers every day.

If you are not much of a people person, do not work in a grocery store. (Stock might be ok). It made me hate people 100x more.

Hah, the worst thing I've been subjected to was when an extrememly obese person asked me to tie his shoe for him.

Might just want to consider a hobby kind of thing then. I personally can't imagine tacking on an extra job as being a fun/shake stuff up thing.

Why not? Make extra money while burning up "free" time and meeting new people. Nothing wrong with that.

I had a "big boned" paraplegic woman wheel up to my register near closing time. She couldn't push the cart so she had her nurse do it for her, and of course, she brought two full carts to check out. At that super market they didn't have baggers so I had to do the pricing + bagging, and all the while the woman is asking me how much everything costs as I'm ringing it.

Ten minutes later I'm finally done and she started looking for her credit card, couldn't find it, and finally reaches into her boobs and out it popped. I shuddered when she handed it to me

All the supermarkets where I live the cashiers do all of the pricing + bagging. They're pretty quick too.

    Re: Generic part-time jobs

Going to toss my vote in for "Pizza Guy". I worked as a pizza guy through college and just went back to it as a 2nd job. Its a great, no stress job, and it made me way better at finding my way around (especially in towns I've never been in, and only have seen a map). Its also pretty good money for how little work you actually do. The downsides? All the girls at work are 16, and I don't look like a stoner anymore so nobody smokes me up. Other than that, I just drive around listening to music until they make me clean something and go home.

One thing that does kinda suck, is having a job that isn't as reputable as your day job. I hate running into someone from the office that doesn't know I work 2 jobs, and explaining to them why I'm Pizza Guying it up.
