    PC Overheating issue

recently upgraded to a better Mobo, hooked everything back up..... and my PC starts to Overheat (processor).

So the computer shut off, and I just didnt feel like dealing with it for the night. So just trying to find out actual reasons why its overheating......

Its mainly, I can watch the temperature in the BIOS. The processor heat steadily rises once the PC is actually on, and reaches 85 degrees in a matter of minutes shutting it off.

Only possible things I can think of, would be a problem with the Fan/thermal paste? Any other things I should look at when I get home that could be possible issues?

Just to make sure, that is in celcius correct?

Main reasons as to why your CPU can overheat that high is too much thermal paste, too little thermal paste, or improper contact from the heatsink to the CPU.

Try cleaning off the thermal paste from the CPU and heatsink with 90% isopropyl alcohol with a coffee filter (or any lint free cloth). Re-apply thermal paste and re-seat the heatsink back onto the CPU.

Dear god I hope not; any CPU getting over 50C is already in peril.

Edit: Though it is odd that it would shut off at 85F.

I imagine it is 85C, as that's closer to what the actual thermal cutoff point would be.

Anyway I would definitely redo the heatsink installation. Clearly there is bad contact going on there. Make sure it's mounted correctly and that you're using the correct amount of thermal paste.

what kind of heatsink is attached? is it one of those that require you to push down the 4 push-pins? if so, make sure they are all completely pushed down, if one isn't pushed down all the way, it could cause the heatsink to make less contact with the cpu

    Yes, 85celcius.

I was in fear, of damage to the processor so thats why I didnt screw around with it last night.

It is one of the 4 pin cooling fans, so I will recheck that..... and I will reapply some artic silver.

remember you don't need a lot of AS5 on there. Put about the size of a pea in the middle of the processor and don't spread it.

That is way too much thermal paste to be putting on. It should be more of the size of an uncooked grain of rice.

You should take the heat sink off the processor and scrape all the AS5 off it and reseat it using only a small amount. That usually does the trick.

The G84 and G86 from Nvidia are generally fucked. You can probably get a replacement from your laptop maker.

About the desktop, sounds like you forgot to put thermal paste on, or you don't have enough pressure between the CPU and heatsink.
