    FFXI on a MacBook?

My girlfriend's interested in getting started on playing FFXI but has a new Intel-based MacBook. Does anyone know what the compatibility is like for FFXI when running Windows XP on a MacBook?

FFXI won't work because most, if no all of those intel Macbooks have shitty intel integrated gfx cards

Yes it will work. In fact, the Intel chipset graphics is more compatible than the ATI Radeon 9000Mobility series.

It will and does work. Here's a screenshot of me playing on my MBP: link

It performs just as well as on a normal PC, and the integrated graphics on the normal MB is better than most of the graphic cards you get in other laptops. It should serve you well for FFXI.

Finally got it running last night. Had one hell of a time getting all the Windows updates downloaded but the game runs fantastic so far. Compact keyboard layout's pretty nice too.

    Re: FFXI on a MacBook?

Running 1280x800 screen rez with 1024x1024 background resolution nets mid to high 20s in Windurst and the same in Saruta during battles. I haven't tried logging on to my character yet on her machine, but I expect that the FPS would get kind of low in places like Whitegate with lots of PCs around. All in all, it's very playable and she only has 1GB of RAM in her machine - though upgrading to 2GB total is coming soon and should help smooth things out a bit.

    Re: FFXI on a MacBook?

I have no idea if it'll suffer from the Ballad/Firaga slowdowns that plague other FFXI setups, but so far it's smooth. I wouldn't want to do a 60-man Dynamis with that laptop but I don't think it would crash out either.

I have a Macbook Pro with Leopard and VMWare Fusion. Has anyone had any luck getting FFXI working well with VMWare? I have windows partition set up with Bootcamp, but I would much rather be able to run it within the virtual machine instead of having to reboot into Windows.

I bought a MacPro when Bootcamp was released and I love it, works perfectly. Also there are programs called VMware Fusion and Parallels which allow you to run Windows on your Mac while on your Mac OSX. I personally bought VMware Fusion and I got it working but I am not a big fan of it since some of the pixel miss and other small problems.

I run 2gb and it runs fine even in Whitegates (no lag) but I also have the quad processor.

    sorry for the semi necro

But i just found out that i have a scholarship for school that's pretty much rotting away. I wanna use it to buy a laptop and the only laptops the school store seems to sell are macbooks.

I've never used any type of mac before, and i'm pretty sure all i'd want to use it for is to play FFXI and torrent i guess. I was kinda looking at the new macbook air or w/e. Seems kinda cool and would be something i can hide at work lol. But again i don't know anything about macs and don't know if i would just be buying some overprice thin laptop. Can anyone suggest a good mac to waste my money on?

I think i should have about $2500 to spend and i wouldn't want to go over that. Given that i'd have to buy from the school store, i don't think i'd be able to get something custom made, its pretty much out of the box. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks-

If you want to do any sort of gaming, don't pick up the air imo. Stick with a macbook, or a macbook pro. I just bought the base model macbook pro for $1799 + free iPod and all in one printer, I definitely enjoy it, and to top it off, its great for class too.
