I tried logging in on one of the desktops this evening after work, and am confronted with these messages. Curious as to if they are real, or bogus, with all the hacking and stuff floating around out there. Asked in the ls, noone had been asked to update the PoL services yet. Wasn't sure what was up.

These are 100% real messages, but you normally only get them when you freshly install FFXI on a computer and need to re-enter your login information.

Are you sure?!?! I was hoping they were real, not sure why i am getting them now, i logged in, on a second account, to check the dbox, and then after logging out, and restarting POL, i was greeted with these wonderful messages, that eventually, as seen in pic3, lead me to re-entering all my id's and pw's.

How can one tell they are 100% real?

Because I've seen them a bazillion times before. I used to install FFXI on machines at my workplace every few weeks, as they were formatted once or twice a month.

FFXI installation used to require inputting all your key codes and what not, but somewhere along the way, they streamlined it. Now, when you reinstall FFXI on a machine and have an existing account, you get those screens and don't need to re-enter any sensitive information.

EDIT: Note that I mentioned you should only receive them after a reinstall, though. I would gather that the file storing this information was corrupted or deleted. I don't know what else would have happened to result in you seeing them without reinstalling FFXI.

so then, i am safe to re-enter all my ids, and the passwords for them?

If you're truly worried, go ahead and run a virus scan, and a spyware scan too. However, I doubt anything is really wrong, although as aforementioned, you might have a corrupt file on your hands. If you always have a good virus scanner and spyware blocker running in the background, that only increases the likelihood of it being a busted file.

Being honest, I doubt anything is amiss, but if you're worried you should do those things for your own peace of mind.

I have hardware question if it okay to post it in this thread. Sometime last year I received a hand-me-down computer from a friend who bought a newer one. It is a compaq presario 2.6ghz with a 512 MB memory. I'm not very good with computers but on wednesday of last week, the computer just shut off randomly while I was playing FF. I restarted it but it would shut down after 30 seconds to 1 minute and keep doing so when I would try again. I removed the memory from the computer and it would stay on, but when I put the memory back in it would shut down. I'm wondering if it is just the memory that might be wrong with the computer or maybe I should take it in for a professional to look at it. It would be cheaper for me to replace the memory if that's the only thing wrong with it and I'm about 75% sure that's the problem but taking it to a professional would be more of a guarantee. Any responses are appreciated.
