SYDNEY, Australia (CBS) - A family claims it got a nasty surprise. Family members said they were served human feces in a bowl of free ice-cream after complaining about the food and staff at an Australian hotel.
The owner said if it's true, then his business is the victim of sabotage.
Steve and Jessica Whyte are furious, claiming they were served human feces at a Sydney Hotel after making a complaint.
The incident happened at the Coogee Bay Hotel on NRL Grand final night three weeks ago, when a large complementary bowl of ice cream was delivered to their table.
Mother Jessica Whyte said, "I dug in with a spoon, it was quite hard to get out but as I did it hit my mouth and started melting room temperature, the stench, and the taste was just so unbelievable. I spat it out in a napkin and it's a horrible story to tell to be honest and then I went and threw up, obviously."
They kept a sample. Scientific testing has confirmed their fears. The hotel is investigating but said it could be an act of industrial sabotage.
Steve Whyte, the father said, "They were trying to blame their ice cream manufacturer initially. We told them it was sitting at the bottom of the bowl, it was planed there, not necessarily for us, we didn't think it was just for us. The thing I can't get over and can't actually get around is, that they served it to the children. I was just fortunate enough, or unfortunate enough, I don't know which to get it before the kids did."
The Whyte family claims they were offered five thousand dollars compensation by the hotel. That's been refused, the matter's now in the hands of their lawyers.
Steve Lewis, Slater and Gordon Lawyers said, "Appalling. A family who attends a hotel has a serious expectation they will not be served human feces."
Hotelier Christopher Cheung does not concede the incident actually happened and denies liability.
Tony Williams, Coogee Bay Hotel Manager said, "It is our wish to continue investigating this serious allegation with the end result of pursuing criminal charges."
Food safety inspectors will investigate the claim.
