Long term goal to decide:

Hey all -

With the end of the production I was involved with and finding myself with time again and being enthused for the update for WHM and whatnot, I have decided that it is time for me to decide really, what a personal long term goal should be for me and pursue it until it is done.

These are things I've been toying with off and on, and I'd just like a little input - they're not really anything 'zomg' because it's stuff dozens and dozens of people have already done, and obviously most have done in a much shorter time frame than I ever will.

a) relic weapon - most likely choice would be Gjallarhorn (i have no fear of being pigeonholed into BRD if I were to have this - and on a note I also already have the attestation of Harmony), but the options of Mjollnir, Kikoku, and Amano would be there as well, though I would have to really buckle down and work out melee equations and whatnot.

b) maat's cap - downside here is twofold - i have no desire whatsoever to play war, drk, mnk, or rng; but i'm also the type who would NOT be able to stand to not be well geared on any job I level, and I would easily kill myself by drowning in gear.

c) Yagrush - this being the only mythic i was interested in, this will partly have to wait until after the update to see exactly how Esuna + Solace works in comparison, but assuming it isn't made obsolete anyway.

Will be putting this on my blog soon too, but figured I'd get a little extra input here. I am not a rich player by any means, so any of these would also require me to do some work in fundraising and such, and just in general being more careful with my gil.

I'd just like to see some debate as to.. most plausible, most enjoyable in the long run, etc... see if any input those people who have done one or others or multiples will help me with a decision.

I honestly cant imagine you after having the kittyhammur sig for so long on anything else but WHM. So I say Yagrush.

I myself am interested in Gjallarhorn, it is definately a good choice. It will help you in everything you do, but you will be stuck as Bard for the rest of your life. As you already stated, you are prepared for that. I see no reason why anyone would want Mjollnir or Kikoku over other choices available for ways to spend your time and money. As for Amanomurakumo, I knew a Samurai who had both that and Yoichinoyumi, and he liked the bow better. Watching him do double Light skillchains without taking hate off the tank was amazing. Another option you didn't list, could be Mandau. You might say, "lolMeleeBard", but why not? It's a good weapon, if you're seriously considering Mjollnir, Mandau looks good in comparison.

I'm not sure what all of your jobs are, but from the relics you listed, I can't see much benefit from getting a Maat's Cap. Bard and White Mage can use Marduk's Tiara, while Ninja and Samurai can use Gnadbhod's Helm. For the amount of sheer misery it would put you through to level jobs you don't like, and pouring money and inventory space into it, it just doesn't seem like a good idea.

Yagrush does look useful, but like you said, its usefullness might go down slightly with the update. It will always be good for Silena, Stona, and Paralyna, no matter what though, and can be used on other parties. If this is the case, another mythic weapon that might have potential is Carnwenhan. With permanent +40% duration on most songs, or all with a Gjallarhorn, you open up the opportunity to spend more of your time helping in other ways, or give yourself more time to go afk, depending on how you play.

Ah, sorry, I guess a little background would be helpful.

As to being afraid of being pigeonholed, I more meant I knew I wouldn't always be stuck on BRD if I got a Gjallar. We have two in the shell already and they swap jobs as much as everyone.

As to my jobs, they are the following: WHM BLM NIN SMN BRD RDM SAM COR, with THF on its way up. All decently geared, my mages probably far better, though BLM and RDM are falling behind quickly without Morrigan. WHM and SMN are pretty much like 'done,' outside a piece or two; BLM and RDM I really can't complain, my melee are good but I just don't spend as much time on them, but I do try to at least be comparable and not just Walmart melee. Have like, an Ace's Helm and all that already.

Mjollnir would totally be a vanity weapon of course, but I am like, the quintessential WHM, everyone still thinks of me as WHM regardless of anything else I level.

1) G-horn is useful, and even though your LS already has two I'd be surprised if they wouldn't help you out at least a little financially. I know FFXI got much easier and more fun in SA once we had at least one G-horn on 24/7, something that is going to become harder when the security token comes out and G-horn accounts can't be dual boxed anymore. The other relics would be an option if you really liked playing those jobs, but it sounds like you don't really.

2) I wouldn't bother with Maat's cap. It's a situationally useful piece for some jobs that takes way too much goddamned effort to obtain. If XPing isn't your pride and joy in FFXI or you aren't 90% of the way there already, I really wouldn't bother with it. There are more FFXI-productive ways to waste hundreds of days of playtime.

3) Yagrush is cool, but it's a macro piece for times when your party gets hit with AoE debuffs and a potential tanking piece if you're interested in that. It'll be useful, especially on stuff that spams AoE debuffs (Dynamis-Tav, Einherjar, anywhere with Soulflayers, etc.) Just make sure you'd actually use it before you upgrade it, obviously.

If this was 3 days ago I'd say GHorn for the inventory space, but that's kinda moot now. Maat's cap is nice for nuking and some WS swaps...I don't think you'd see much use from it.

Yagrush is shiny and cool, it's may only be a swap piece but you'd probably get to use it more than the relic club...I'd vote that.

I think I can understand what you mean as I am in a similar situation, decided to go for Excalibur after Aegis to keep me in-game for a while (I am a tank so it was a clear shot for me).

From what I can humbly suggest, if you have a steady source of income and it's just a matter of time to accomplish it, why not go for a relic/mythic... A Maat's Cap will give you some degree of satisfaction as well when you reach the goal, but not really the same level of benefits a Gjallarhorn/Yagrush will provide in your end-game activities.

It might sound obvious but it really depends on what you want to do in terms of 'reason why': something for yourself or something for your LS. Being a career WHM (I assume?), the clear choice (to me) is to go for Yagrush - althought Izzy might have something to say about this

In the end, whatever you choose, definitely do the "two chicks at once"-thing Neo was mentioning, it's an utter win no matter what!
