towards the back end is where the reviews start.
I've had mine since december.
It's an awesome phone. There's a ton of awesome apps. Most of the best apps are free ones. There are some good pay ones too though. The paid apps were just released a couple weeks ago, so the great ones are out yet.
The camera is not the best, but I don't ever use it for taking pictures so idc.
The apps I have are:
1 Click Direction (It's not true turn by turn GPS, but it's close enough where I can't tell the difference)
Hello AIM!
Chomp SMS
Myspace and Facebook APP
Shazam
ShopSavvy
Steel (Much better than the browser that comes with the phone)
YellowBook
Chomp SMS and ShopSavvy are definitely must-haves. Is Steel worth it? I'm pretty down with the default browser, only one glitch bugs me: Sometimes when scrolling, it decides "you did something so now I'm gonna rapid-scroll until you freak out and stop me". I have yet to figure out what causes this.
The camera is pretty ok if you have a steady hand. I wish more people ported apps from the iPhone, there's a Go client for the iPhone I'd love to have on my google phone.
I just got mine a few days ago. best investment in a phone I ever made.
I got this yesterday, loving it so far :D
Have it, loveit. Camera is good compared to other cell phones, but yes need a steady hand.
FREE SHIT YESPLZ.![]()
how is the feeling/handling on it ?? i really cant decide between G1 and IPhone ... meh ;;
Steel is a lot better than the regular browser.
You get auto-rotate, and on screen keyboard.
I've heard that it sucks batteries like your mom when she's around me. Confirm/deny? How long does a full charge last, on how much usage?
If your using wifi/browsing the net for like 2 hrs ya it's going to drain your battery but i've done normal usage a few phone calls and 100+ texts a day from going into work at 7am and going to bed at 10/11 and had no problems running out of battery life and thats with playing some games from time to time. If your start surfing the web extensively its going to burn fast just like a laptop would. Normal use batter is fine.
PS I use Open Home/live folders/multiple emails including exchange that all use batter up more than normal use would that does not use those frequently updating apps.
The battery isn't as bad as I thought it would be.
I happen to work for T-Mobile and own the G1 as well. It's definitely the most *fun* phone we have out on the market, I wouldn't recommend it for business purposes or whatnot, just stick with a blackberry in that sense.
It's more of a recreational device than anything. It's very very similar to the iphone in terms of functionality. I prefer the actual keyboard to the required virtual keyboard on the iphone, that and the fact its going to cost you about $25-30 less a month to own the G1 than the iPhone probably is the most attractive facet of it.
I still need some Must have Apps, I got most of the ones posted above.
I have:
AnyCut - Allows you to create a shortcut for about any action you want on your desktop
aTrackDog - A program that will automatically check for updates for the apps that you already have downloaded, you can manually do this without having this app, but I'd prefer it be checked automatically for me
Backgrounds - Meh, I don't want to buy wallpapers and making all my own gets old
Bar Control - Semi Neat, basically allows me to make a bar of frequently used apps, gets more practical when you download tons more apps and dont want to scroll through all of them, also makes it so you don't have to go to your homescreen to switch to an app
aFile - It's a file manager basically and allows you to move files back and forth from computer/phone or phone/phone via the use of WiFi without needing a cable, mostly used for phone/computer transfers.
imeem - Allows you to play internet radio basically, only issue is that the music is frequently not of the same genre if you start to listen to one band and it gets to the next song, drains battery fairly quick
Loopt - GPS service that allows you to see where your friends are via a "buddy list" of sorts, they dont have to have the loopt application running for you to see where they are, just have to have you added basically, not sure how many types of devices this works for...I still need to play with and learn more about this app
Quickpedia - Wiki on a phone
Ringdroid - allows me to take mp3 put on my phone and make my own ringtones
Save MMS - by default, if you receive an MMS, the G1 cannot save that picture from the message to your phone, this app fixes that
Shazam - people know this app by now, can identify a song for you if you place the phone up to the song being played
Shop Savvy - Turns your camera into a barcode scanner, scan barcode of a product, will pull up stores in your area that sell this same product and for how much
Sim Checker - if a sim card other than your own is put into your G1, it will send a message with the GPS location of your phone to a phone number or email of your choice
Chomp SMS - New texting interface/client, its decent
Steel - New Browser, its decent
Stream Furious - Allows you to stream internet radio, I listen to a lot of Trance, so i listen to Digitally Imported, probably the most used app on my phone, drains battery life pretty fast
Useful Switchers - quick toggle of several system settings
Weatherbug - I just like to see what the temperature is outside without being outside, places current temp in the status bar up top, lately hasnt been automatically updating for me though
Lets see where to start, i had this phone for about a month, i was really excited when i got it because it was tmobiles top of the line cellphone. Its a ok phone over all it really lacks movie play back and file sorting like off the memcard all the video playback programs suck. Theres no games at all for it.
Ive heard that the cupcake 2 update that is suppose to come out got cancelled a while back and theyve just been leading ppl on with it.
The phone has a horrible battery life. Mine wouldnt last more then a full work day.
So i went and got the iphone, tried that out and fell inlove with it , all the apps are great it has alot more games then the g1, and the applications are actually useful.
Iphone>G1
Check out HowardForums for some g1 stuff, apps and cracks
The Iphone has been around much longer, so of course it's going to have better games and a ton more apps.
I think the last update fixed some of the problems with the battery also. I run mine with GPS on all the time, and I can go like a day and a 1/2 without having to charge. The next big update was delayed, I think it's supposed to come towards the end of April though.
I have a decent video player app. I think it's called "Video Player" lol. It's got auto-tilt screen for the screen, and the basic play features (Play, Pause, Fast Forward, Rewind)
Just a heads up.. Cupcake was officially previewed by Google Today:
Google Previews Android 'Cupcake' Update -- Google Android Smartphone -- InformationWeek
few question, what is cupcake? I heard aboout it, no clue what it is, and also, what exactly does getting root access to your phone do?
You can do a lot with Root Access. But, you could also completely fuck up your phone if you don't know what you're doing. That's why it isn't unlocked on the phones off the bat. You could do some cool shit with it. Run Apps from your SD Card and tethering are probably the most useful.
Cupcake is actually an Android Division of Google, that basically works on updates for the phone. This update is going to have a default virtual on screen keyboard, improve the camera, offer video recording/playback, auto-tilt with the accelerometer, and improved browser capabilities
