Problems with VPN connection in Korea

I know a number of you here are in Korea or some other country where SE has blocked POL/FFXI access, so perhaps someone can help me.

For several months I had been using PacketiX free VPN server, based in Japan. It was decently fast and stable until a few days ago. Now it disconnects me every 2 hours or so, and can take 20+ tries to reconnect. Last night we got fed up with it and decided to try a paid VPN service, from WiTopia because they offer a 30 day money back guarantee. It was nice to have a US IP from them so I could watch Hulu etc, but it has been very unstable for FFXI so far, and much slower than the JP VPN when it was working.

If anyone could recommend a better VPN service to use, please let me know. I'm about to go fire off another angry letter to SE Customer Service about them blocking Korean IPs and forcing me to jump through so many hoops to play this game...

Contact Wiitopia support. I use them extensively in China.

What you need to do is change from the UDP format to the TCP varient.

Here are the instructions from my conversation


You could try our soon to be released TCP-based version of personalVPN.

Right-click on the gui icon, select "Edit Config"

Find Tthe lines beginning with "proto" and "remote", then change to this:

proto tcp
remote tcpvpn.witopia.net 443

Save and try connecting again.

Is that for the PPTP or SSL(openVPN) version? Since we were just testing this service we went with the cheapest option (PPTP) and I'm not sure those config options are available. If the SSL version using these settings would work better, then we will definitely cancel the PPTP and buy a subscription to SSL.

When I signed up for it, I got the SSL one with a free PPTP one.

I'll test the VPN later tonight to see if its any good buts its TERRIBLY slow in China.

Just wanted to post again to say thanks. We changed to the SSL service from WiTopia and changed the settings as you had in your post, and even though we're laggy, we have a good stable connection now. I think our IP address is either from Canada or Europe, because Hulu doesn't work now ^^; Ah well, I can find some other site for streaming/download of US shows.
