HP Mini Laptop and Installing Office 2007 Enterprise

So, one of my coworkers asked me to help her set up this new HP mini laptop that she bought last weekend with Office 2007. My company has a deal with Microsoft where if you have Office on your work PC, you get a home copy for $10. So, she buys the Enterprise version of Office 2007, does a direct download to the mini PC, and it's not installing.

The details as I know them are this:

OS: Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002, service pack 3
Processor: 1.6GHz Intel Atom
1G RAM

With about 10G open storage on a 16G hard drive.

The error when opening the install file is simply, "The installation of this package failed".

When rifling through Microsoft's support center, suggested fixes were

1. I have Windows Installer v3.1 on the PC (that's outdated, this PC has a more recent version of the Installer)

2. Check to see if the Temp folder is encrypted (it's not)

3. There isn't enough free space on the HD for the install file to decompress. Windows support suggested that you need 5-6 times the space that the install file takes up. The install file is half a gig, the mini laptop has more than enough open space for that.



All the product reviews and recommendations from HP and other consumer sites say that Office will run on this thing, so I'm really drawing a blank on how to proceed, and there's really only so many ways I can type the same thing into Google to try and get answers.

Any thoughts on things that I'm missing?

I also... downloaded office 2007 enterprise /whistle, but yeah, can safely say it's not filling up that 10gb hard drive so fast. There could've just been an error in downloading. What I would do is torrent a copy and then use the key she was provided with on install. If that still doesn't work, you'll know it downloaded fine. I assume you checked this out? http://www.wiredbox.net/Forum/Thread...ge_failed.aspx says it can fail if there's any previous versions of 2007 installed. Like for example, xp - MCE comes with a beta version that needs to be removed first. I know hers is the home version, but can't hurt to look around for anything just incase.

Ugh, I'd hate to go through the hassle of a torrent.

I'm going to try to re-download the file and see if that works.

It should work fine on those things, I've got a couple netbooks at the office, one's an HP with XP/office/etc. The other (Acer) I have Windows 7 RC on, haven't installed office yet. (though those have 160GB HDs I believe).

Either way, it ain't the hardware. I'd suspect a corrupt install file, I've had that happen before. If you're trying to install from a USB key, don't rule out that it could be going bad, I've had a couple of 'em die on me. The more recent of which had that sort of issue with the Office 2007 install folder I had on it.

I purchased the same software a week ago through the same promotion at work, so I've tried downloading from the link provided to my email account as well as to the other user's email account. I've also tried opening the file directly from the download and saving to the desktop.

I agree that everything I'm reading suggests a bad file, but I'm really not sure how to get around that other than (ugh) torrenting.

rlslog.net is a good alternative, if you dont mind dealing with rapidshare/megaupload/rar files.

Me again. Turns out the file wouldn't fully download on to the mini, so I had to save it on another PC, throw it on a jump drive, and move it over.

Everything works now, thank you for the help.
