You don't need an article to tell you something your common sense should have already told you.

This is the same shit as with HFCS and Trans Fats. They use this shit because it's "safe" but then it contributes to problems like diabetes in children and obesity and people wonder WTF the problem is.

Genetically modified food should simply be treated like a drug and go through clinical trials (which of course is extremely expensive and unlikely). Pesticides are different, we know they're dangerous and we can do something about it (wash our food!) - but if you're eating something that can increase the risks of certain diseases and you don't know you're pretty much screwed.

Monsanto tried unsuccessfully to convince the FDA and FTC to make it illegal for dairies to make rbGH-free claims, so they went to their special friend in Pennsylvania -- Dennis Wolff. As state secretary of agriculture, Wolff unilaterally declared that labeling products rbGH-free was illegal, and that all such labels must be removed from shelves statewide. This would, of course, eliminate the label from all national brands, as they couldn't afford to create separate packaging for just one state.
This pisses me off beyond belief, I'm surprised that this is the first I've heard of this.

I can't believe someone could pull this off. As far as I'm concerned, if your product is conceptually 'free' of something, you should be able to write that on your product if you want to, you know, as long as it doesn't actually have that in it.

Washing and cooking food properly doesn't always removed the pesticides. Plants absorb alot of the liquids and powders used for pesticides when combined with water. There's really no way to deal with our food not being dangerous in this day and age, since we have too many people to feed, and not enough food.

If I have to choose between chemical pesticide residue on genetically modified crops, or no food at all, I'll pick not starving to death.

I won't debate the quality, but the actual health advantages aren't as great as you might think. and I have to wonder how many local farmers still use pesticides on their crops. but at least you don't have to worry about the GM aspect. so, that's good.

They really don't absorb a lot. There are pretty stringent guidelines on how much pesticides can be in foods, and the FDA does take samples. Not of everything of course, but enough samples to show reasonably well that only about 1% of tested foods have levels of pesticides above supported tolerance levels.

The problem with genetically modified foods, as I said early, is different because we simply don't know how harmful they are. On the other hand there have been and continue to be studies showing the health effects of pesticides. Known risk > unknown risk.

They had an article that backed that up on Sciecedaily a few months ago. For organic being so organic and not using anything, why the hell does it cost triple the cost of everything else.

I mean no chemicals means it should be cheaper in my book. My family are all gardeners and farmers and that aspect of it just does not add up to me.

well late saturday nite. couldn't sleep and was visiting another gaming forum. then they showed me a link to an video about where your current food is from. then i youtubed Monsanto and found this

YouTube - The World According to Monsanto - Part 1 of 8

and ever since then i have been googling, finding more information etc. i know there are shit in our food, but the things this company has done. really interesting and really scary.

    and also this:

In April 1998, Akre and husband Steve Wilson sued Tampa's Fox-owned WTVT station. The reporters had been fired over their four-part investigative series on bovine growth hormone. A number of farmers in several states, Akre and Wilson discovered, were injecting their cows with the controversial additive. The story would expose its maker, the Monsanto Company, for failing to inform the F.D.A. about the hormone's potential health risks on those who drink milk, the journalists claimed.

Monsanto threatened Fox, and the station pulled the story after Akre and Wilson refused to slant their findings, according to the lawsuit. The team soon found itself embroiled in a sour seven-year court battle with the "fair and balanced" network.

Have fun paying 2-3x as much for food that's probably just as harmful. Most "organic" crops are the exact same shit as "normal" crops, just like "free-range" meat is the same as normal meat. Everything grown in the first world has been cross-pollinated either intentionally or unintentionally with GM foods.

We've been modifying crops for thousands of years, just more slowly due to less available technology. Have you ever eaten corn? Corn that came from a huge, unnatural cob with soft kernels that looks nothing like it did a couple hundred years ago? Congratulations. You've eaten artificially modified food.

I think that has less to do with the cost of the product and more to do with the effective sales abilities of these whole foods stores. Packaging, shipping, distribution and shelving costs all get passed to the consumer, and when you have a lower volume of product that goes through this process to get to the shelves, you have a greater markup per item.

Plus, local markets and whole-foods stores have a smaller variety of items sold, which means the store's overhead is passed on to a greater number of products as a whole within that store.

for real, the only thing I really go for in that vein is cage-free eggs, because they just plain taste better. actually, a lot of organic foods from small farms do taste better, so if that's your reasoning for buying them, go for it. but if you think it's going to make you some sort of superman next to all us poor normal folk, you might want to think again.

and you know they just charge more because they can get away with it.

As my friend once said, if you put "Death Crystal Free!" on a product, it might lead you to believe that the other products do contain death crystals.

Its not just Monsanto, watch Food Inc. It's eye opening stuff our food industry is. Technically there have been no conclusive proven health problems resulting from pesticides in humans so yeah I would rather eat pesticide soya/corn then give the swine at Monsanto another penny. Organics are often more expensive firstly because its a pain in the ass to get certified organic and costs a fuckton of money to upkeep the farm/livestock in this manner. Other big issue is much of our 'organic' food is grown in places like Chile so the distance travelled factors into the cost(essentially why all food got more expensive before the recession). So really what happens is many small farmers in the US will avoid the whole hassle/headache of getting their cert and instead just sell the shit in the store/farmers market. So you need to get to know your local farmers and markets, learn who to trust/buy from and you can easily get more naturally grown/raised shit for reasonable prices.
