Windows 2000 Support Information (10/9/09)

We regret to inform you that PlayOnline will no longer support Windows 2000 in accordance with the following schedule.

Due to the fact that Microsoft(R) has already completed the support life cycle of this product, we have found that continuing support for this OS is a difficult proposition.

At the time support for this product ceases, the software you are currently using will continue to function and games will still be playable. We will also continue to perform regular updates of existing software. However, after the date when we discontinue support, we will as a general rule no longer be able to provide support for problems arising as a result of the operating system.

Furthermore, customer support for members utilizing this operating system will still be available through the Square Enix Support Center.

Would be horrible driverwise for most videocards. XP sadly would probably perform better. (Most videocards even supported for 2000 usually stop around 9800PRO/6800GT's for legacy)

sony hasnt stopped ps2 support because it still sells good. since the price drop of the ps3 it has slowed and will probably drop off, then they will call end of life for it but SE wont stop support until XIV comes out and they can scuttle the game

I played FFXI on a Win2k laptop for most of my FFXI career, ran fine. Never installed WotG so no idea if it would have ran worse but why would it.

FFXI worked on Win98. Win2K is still stable enough, probably even more than XP, and is quite usable, for a little lower system specs than XP needs.

I run FFXI on W2K on one of my desktop machines. I still consider it the best of all of Microsoft's recent OS releases, although support for it is gradually diminishing with the passage of time. It doesn't have the consumer-candy features of XP, but it's stable and reasonably resource-efficient, and lacks the various authentication nagging and such (for those who like to mod their systems a lot).

I was a day 1 Win2K install since I was ready to get away from the shit that was Win9x. I still have fond memories of that experience, even if XP was better and had a revised codebase.

This wouldn't do anything but make costumer service for PS2 nonexistent and maybe prevent them from accessing new expansion-specific content.

Did run pretty well back on my p3 550~, 512 RAM and 32 MB(or 64, don't remember) GeForce MX440 card.

Aside from jacking the GFX up which would not enable it to run "good", it sounds pretty much like FFXI was awesome back then and sucky now

Nah, that's just how most MMOs go, last MMO I played before this has a forum where a majority of the members seem to be retired vets from the game talking about how awesome the game used to be.

Oh I meant performance wise!

If it ran fine on Win2k on a Pentium 3 500mhz, 512mb RAM and 64mb GFX, yet today we struggle with something 4-fold of that, it seems like it was easier to get it to run back then. (this was before we discover how to jack up the graphics I guess)
