Router Question

Alright, situation first: I have a DSL Router/Modem that takes the rj19 in and has four rj45 outputs and outputs wireless as well. I just recently acquired a router that has an rj45 input and four rj45 outputs, and outputs wireless as well.

The DSL Router/Modem has to be the primary router, so when I attempted to use the second router as an access point or something the wired connections are all fine, but the second router was still broadcasting it's wireless in default router settings and I can't change them because 192.168.1.1 brings me to the primary routers options thingy. What I want is for them to both broadcast different wireless (as one is a g and one is n capable), but still be on the same network; and to be able to access both routers software. Is that possible?

The second router has a usb port, which is probably going to be connected to a printer soon; that will allow all computers connected to it through wired and wireless connections to use the printer, but is there a way to get the computers connected to the primary router to use it?

How old is your "newer" router? Getting it to be an access point for wireless could be a problem if it's too old.

To get into the "newer" router setup your network like this:

DSL > Router > PC(attached by a wire), and find the default gateway on the PC and that will be the router, unless you already turned off DHCP, in which case, you should probably reset your router and start over.

Once you get into the second router, assign it a address from the same subnet as your DSL modem, and turn off DHCP on the router.

All else fails, call the tech support for the router and they can walk you through it.

The newer router is a Asus RT-N13U. It has a switch on the bottom to switch it between Router/Repeater/Acess Point.

Now, when I connect the newer router to the older one, am I connected it to the WAN port or one of the Outputs? Also; Is it okay to just restrict the DHCP addresses on each router to different limits, say 3-50 on the older one and 53-100 on the newer one instead of turning off DHCP on the newer router?

If I'm setting it up like the way you describe, am I setting it up as another router or just an access point? (Can I access the newer routers setup if I'm using it as an access point?)

Do you want the second router to act as an access point to extend your network or do you want it to allow for faster 802.11n connections?

To allow for faster 802.11n connections; and to use the network printer, and the other fun options in the routers option thingy.

You can set up two different wireless networks in that case. Setup your primary router with an SSID for .11g and your new router with an SSID for .11n. Put them on different channels. You can use the same security and passwords.

Turn off DHCP and the firewall on your secondary router.

Connect all of your .11g wireless devices to your primary router and all of your .11n devices to the secondary router. If you connect .11g devices to your .11n router, it will communicate at .11g speeds.

You can access your secondary router using its IP address (192.168.1.1 is only the default address). Your primary router will give it one.

Your secondary router will need to be plugged into a LAN port on your primary router. Don't plug anything into the WAN/Internet port on the second router. This will connect everything together via Ethernet.

Nice and easy! Changed it over from the WAN port to an output port, and turned off DHCP and everything is working perfectly now. .1.1 for my dsl modem/router and .1.2 for my new router. Weeee
