    3D TV Announced

Yes thats right, 3d TV. some applications mentioned are:

    Discovery (animal shows!)
    ESPN (probably the coolest application)
    Movies

But, im more excited about what the porn industry can crank out using this tech.

    <http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/158599;_ylt=AtfKA5zq1dv78GNFK8DZ_w6IMJA5?comment_s tart=86&comment_count=20#see_comments>

Don't have a 3D TV yet? Never mind that they don't really exist -- you better get cracking. Some of the biggest names in television are announcing plans to begin broadcasting in 3D later this year.

DirectTV and Sony are unveiling their 3D channels this week at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. That’s the annual trade show where tech companies show off their latest products and give the public (and reporters) a glimpse of the Next Big Thing.

Both DirecTV and a joint venture formed by Discovery, Sony, and Imax are likely to stake a claim on the "first" moniker for their 3D channels, though neither has a specific launch date set.

DirecTV's model, set to be announced at CES this week, is an all-HD/3D network, courtesy of a new satellite which will launch this March. All programming will be in 3D, including movies, sports, and other programming. Just imagine the possibilities of a 3D newscast!

Then there's the Discovery/Sony/Imax venture, which was announced today and is set to launch in 2011. This station will showcase a mix of sports and other entertainment, including 3D versions of Discovery's current programming.

And that's not all: ESPN announced it will launch a 3D network, broadcasting live 3D sporting events beginning in June of this year. Expect more such announcements as the month wears on and 3D (presumably) gains traction.

Now the question becomes a simple one: Who will be watching all of this 3D content, and how? That's a puzzler that will hopefully find the beginnings of an answer starting this week at CES, as the major television vendors show off their vision for 3D entertainment in the home, hopefully offering some insight into that age-old question of how accepting people are going to be about wearing headgear when lounging around at home... and whether that's going to get in the way of all the nuzzling on the couch.

Still, it's nice to know that, should 3D equipment actually take off, we'll actually have something to watch instead of just sitting around looking like nerds.

I saw ESPN mention this last night.

They have 85sporting events planned for their debut of ESPN 3D, starting with the first match of the 2010 world cup.

I can say that a shit ton of movies out on dvd now are being converted to 3-D. The industry is taking this concept very seriously.

If it's going to be cheesy garbage like in 3-D movies then no thanks.

Sounds like it's just the same mundane stuff they always broadcast, only in 3D. So no throwing stuff at the screen just for the sake of exploiting the 3D.

ESPN broadcasts are going to be Live as well, so there shouldn't be anything crazy about it.

HD looks just fine to me, anything 3D is just a gimmick IMO

Proper 3D isn't a gimmick, it's just more immersion in the picture.

Im placing my bets that this will fail horribly. As of right now any TV can display '3D', you just need those glasses. Now if this were real 3D with holograms and all, great, but ive no idea who will be dumb enough to buy these.

im thinking that, at first, there will be the throwing stuff at the screen stuff going on. Even if by accident. I know if i saw a 3d camera at a football game id throw something at it. Then LULZ at everyone at home.

Then youll have the stuff done on purpose.

Though the ladies might like some of the 3d features in a porno. I know one girl who still loves peter north.. even though hes kind of flabby now. I think shed faint if she saw that in 3d.

Honestly, i am looking foward to the nature shows and sport events. I think those have awesome potential. Heck, even wrestling could have potential in this. Rey Mysterio flinging someone towards the camera could look pretty cool. But, football and soccer would also rock. I dont think there would be enough movement in boxing for it to matter though, but i could be wrong.

What do these networks mean when they throw around the term 3D? Like is shit going to be popping out of my screen or are they just going to be able to stop and play the same picture at different angles?

I haven't watched anything in 3D since ABC had their entire TGIF lineup of shows in 3D with those red/blue glasses that you had to get out of cereal boxes. That shit was so gimmicky and boring that I haven't felt the need to watch anything in 3D since.

I can see myself gaming with glasses on, but watching standard TV? I don't want to wear those dorky things while I'm trying to relax on the couch, unless the source is hinting at 'new' 3d TVs which may drop the glasses requirement.

I want it to fail horribly. It's a step in the wrong direction in terms of advancements. We should be looking outside the box (literally), where there will be a display unit in each corner of the room that will display a hologram or something.

This is just the 3D glasses phase all over again.

There are already HDTV's that do this, from what I have been told. (The 3D without glasses, I mean)

How the frig would you film a movie that would work properly in a scenario like that?

Movies are still filmed in a 'frame', where you can look at the frame, look into the frame, but not away from it. And just like bumpmapped textures in video games, if you try to look at it from a steep angle, the effect doesn't work.
