And is it worth it?
I basically got a gift card to Barnes & Noble basically with the idea I either use the money for a nook or use it to buy it's worth in actual books.
Now I am torn. :/

Books are awesome. When I finally bring myself to read, I can't stop reading it until I am done. Go for the books.
Jodi Picoult is good. But that's probably not your thing, haha.
I thought you were talking about a binkie or a pacifier...
I have a crannny
Idk, I have tried both and I prefer using an actual book. I am kind of old school with some things like that though, just something I like about having pages and what not (like, I still prefer to take notes in class with a pen and paper instead of on my laptop).
wtf is a Nook? I came in expecting it to be a sexual innuendo and now I'm just confused/dissapointed. On topic though, I love reading, unless a Nook is some really powerful smurf laser or something else equally cool I'd get a few good books.
The gf has one, loves it. The only complaints from her is it slow in downloading, but thats because she downloads like 20 books at a time.
Played with it for a little bit, pages turn a bit too slow for my liking. Wish I could change the font color and size.
Still some bugs need to be worked out, still have freezing issues. But nothing a simple reboot won't help.
I would recommend playing around with one to see if you like it before you buy.

Since people are confused:

It's the Ereader.
Now keep in mind, books that you d/l on there are usually a little cheaper than the actual book.
The other advantage is every month they have about 500~ titles for free. So it wouldn't take long to get my money back, but ya there's something about an actual book that's comfy.
I have a breakfast nook.
I first read it as "rook" and was like, fuck yeah chess.
Hmm, I guess it's personal preference? I have both paper and digi formats. Digi has become my favourite though, it's really convenient since you don't have to carry its paper counterparts around. You can also dl on the fly and free ;o
Oh I see. I've started to read most of my books on my laptop, I'm a bit disorganized so I always have had a tendency to lose books and then get mad when I wanted to re-read them. I think something like a nook would be more useful overall than a few books, but I'm not sure how much I like the one in the link. It seemed really small to me, can you even fit a full page worth of text on the screen without resorting to extremely small text size? I don't like having to turn pages that often, having to change each paragraph would annoy me to now end. Also problems Division3 posted about make me also a bit unsure, something like that should work flawlessly, how hard is it to make a portable e-reader? All it has to do is read .pdf or .mobi, there shouldn't be a slowdown for turning pages unless it is low quality...
I'm torn! I guess it depends if you are comfortable reading digitally instead of from a physical book. Eventually you're going to be giving up the physical books for digital versions, so why not start now?
So what you're saying is you're not sure if you should use it all for the e-nook?
I use my HTC for reading books, just torrent, drag and drop to storage and done ;o. Really high resolution too.
Dunno how old your gf's is but you can change the font size in the newer ones at least.
I'm more and more leaning towards the nook lol. The gift card is 300$ and the nook is 250$
looking at the list of free books:
http://www.epubbooks.com/books
I could easily go through 250$ worth np pretty quickly (there's no such thing as rereading classics too much). I go through books insanely fast (I'm usually not allowed into B& N cause I end up buying like 5 books there and finish them within a month). I always need to be reading something or I go a little nutty. Equally I'm starting to run out of space for my real books.
Oh and for those that say "library!" our library fails and I read a lot of book series. More often or not my library only will have the first book in the series or like book 3 in the series for some dumb reason.
I am worried on if they are glitchy and prone to break though...
Just curious, what is unique about these e-reader type things like the Nook or the lolipad? It seems like an upper tier phone should be able to run an app that can read e-book files. iirc my Blackberry is able to read .mobi's. I'm not trying to bash on the Nook or other similar products, I'm honestly curious what they can do that is special enough to warrant a 250$ pricetag, I don't know much about them. Screen size obviously is one thing I imagine, what else is there?
I would also say the way it's lit. The ereaders are lit in a way to not strain your eyes from staring at the screen. And they can store up to like 1500 books, so you could in theory start using this to put on your bookshelves rather than the actual books.
Also, for me at least it's also the item itself for work. By that I mean since I substitute teach, I can't be staring at my cell phone (would get in trouble lolol), but an ereader would be ok.
Oh and you only need to recharge it every 10 days. Though that's not really a plus. XD
Well and that of course my cell phone wouldn't be able to handle it, so that would require getting a 500$+ cell phone just so I could read books.
That makes sense, I hadn't thought of the etiquette thing. There's a lot of situations where staring at your phone is rude, but an e-reader you can read pretty much anywhere. Storage makes sense too, although I think since books take up almost no space (off the top of my head, just looked at my most recent e-book download and it was only 400kb) that in the future phones should be able to handle holding it.
The etiquette thing makes sense. I find it kind of hard to balance, on one hand I want one tool to be able to do everything so I'm not carrying around a bunch of things, like ipod, cell phone, e-reader etc. I guess it's ok for girls who have a purse, but I'm always trying to cut down on carrying stuff around since I don't like my pockets bulging.
