How to check POL mail account with other mail clients

This will save you the clunky POL Viewer interface and 100 message per folder limit. I've got Thunderbird worked out. Here's the settings that just worked for me.

The thing that hung me up for a while is that you have to have "Use secure authentication" checked or it will fail.

SMTP server for outgoing mail is ma000.pol.com and it needs to be secure too. I think the numbers in place of 000 can be different based on your account. This will keep you from losing your POL mail password if you reinstall. I'd still write it down in your manual though.

I'll see if I can figure it out for Outlook Express and some others later. I've got it working on Mac OS X Mail and Outlook Express 5.0.6 for Mac OS 9 too, but I have to remember how to take screenshots on those OSes. Feel free to post settings for other programs yourself or request them.

Didn't know POL allowed POP access, that's pretty cool. Would have been useful for when I had an account. Any ideas on IMAP?

So the POL & SE Account logins aren't needed just your mail account name and password?

That's the way it's always been. The mail server is seperate from the game and account server for access. I've been set up to check my mail like this on my old Mac for about 8 years now. It was one of the first things I did with my FFXI account. It was pretty obvious looking at the settings menu in the mail program.

Getting into your POL email isn't going to do much considering they don't send password resets to it.
