Looking for a nice GNU/Linux distro

I'm going back to GNU/Linux but I don't know which distro to use. I like Ubuntu but it just seems to be missing something. I'm looking for something small, fast and lite (I don't use half the shit they put on Ubuntu). I used to use Ark but I'm a lazy ass and had issues with it. This will be running on a laptop.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask .

I also want a distro that tends to stay up to date with packages like GNOME and Firefox.

Debian? Try VL is you're a mid-newbie. lolubuntu.

Arch Linux is those things, but it's a little more advanced (not much though, it's easy to install and get running + the install FAQ on their site helps if you get stuck somewhere).

It's a rolling distro, so you pretty much get close to the latest packages; also means some stuff can break sometimes if you pull from the testing repo...

Debian is the best imo. Can't ever go wrong with it.

If you've never used Linux properly (i.e. outside of X) before Gentoo and Debian will be a bit complicated. But it's a good learning curve. I'd recommend Debian ;D

Well he did say "going back to Linux" so I figured he had some sort of background in it. Why not just get both and see which one you like better? I mean they are free.
