Default Gateway

I have been having problems with my internet connection, and when I hit diagnose and repair it gives me this:

The default gateway is not available: Fixed

The default gateway is a device that connects a local network or computer to the Internet. A broadband modem or router is usually the default gateway.



It says I joined the wireless network. but I have no internet connection. I can go 2-3 days with beautiful internet connection, then one day it just stops working.

right click on the network adapter and go to properties, go down to the tcp part on the scroll down bar and hit properties on that. make sure its all dynamic and nothing is filled in

Seems likes it all set to automatic already

try power cycling your router and see if it fixes the problem. Could be the router.

Could it be my ISP? This router is fairly new, and seems like this only happens when there are more than 2 wireless people trying to connect to it. Even though it has 4 ports.

Is the router like a modem/router/2-in-1 kinda thing? it's possible if you just noticed it when they gave it to you

We have Cox cable, and we have a seperate modem for that. I took pics of the error messages:

1) open a command prompt and do IPconfig /all and post here

1) IP adress
2) Subnet Mask
3) default gateway

Then go into your router config, in the DHCP option and make sure it sends the gateway to your PC

The problem seems that your router is giving you the wrong DNS name


My router gaves me the ISP DNS not the 192.168.1.1

Trick to make sure the problem is the DNS


Open a Browswer window and instead of going to www.google.com write

72.14.204.103


I that brings you to google then the DNS server is in problem or the router is giving you the wrong adress

i use that router at work, wired it has worked perfectly for months, wifi drops out every few days for no reason whatsoever (basically my phone is the only thing using wifi there, so i don't really care). to fix it i change the wifi security password to exactly what it was and save it which power cycles the wifi. i can then connect afterwards. try that. if you don't have security setup for wireless, you should, and that might also fix it (because it will reinitialize wifi).

i bet if you tried a wired connection right now it would work fine, so see if you can just re-initialize the wireless.

Did that and brought me to google, but yet again I need to wait till it dies away.

I recently changes my security password, I'll power cycle and change it back and see if that fixes it.

Are you on a PC or Laptop? If you're on a Laptop (I'm not sure about Vista, or 7, but for XP, go into device manager and check the properties for your network card, and under the "power management" tab, make sure the box "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked.

Sounds like duplicate IPs on your network, when the other ip connects, it boots you off and you have to power cycle to get a new one. That could be the problem if there's more than one computer connecting to that router.

Set up static addresses for each device that don't conflict, or get a different device to act as a DHCP server, because the one you are using apparently isn't doing a proper job of assigning nonconflicting addresses. I prefer to just give all of my machines static addresses so I can troubleshoot at will if the network has problems, and it keeps my firewall port forwarding intact without having to tweak it every day.
