I quit / cancelled my FFXI account over 2 years ago and haven't touched it since. Last week, a charge for $58.90 from SquareEnix showed up on my credit card. I called my bank and told them that was a fraudulent charge. My bank performed a chargeback on them since I had not authorized that transaction. I later got an email from PlayOnline informing me of said chargeback and that my account would be suspended, not that I care since I stopped playing 2 years ago.

How messed up is their billing system that they will bill a customer for a large amount over 2 years after service was rendered? This seems more malicious (and illegal) than accidental. "Hey, this guy hasn't subscribed for 2 years, let's see if we can take $60 from him without him noticing. It's not like we'd lose a customer since he already quit."

At least you noticed this, I often forget to double check my bills at the beginning of the month, and will from time to time double check things only when someone leaves a post here about something.

Well, I don't think I owe them an apology. I never authorized them to charge my card, and they did. But wow, someone evidently did steal an old stale account. Given the gap between me using the account, I have no idea how whoever that is got the account information.

It doesn't seem like they extracted the account information from me in anyway with a keylogger or anything of the sort since it was nearly 2 years between my typing of that information and that Auction House evidence from FFXIAH. Perhaps it was extracted directly from a PlayOnline / SE database. Scary thought.

Interesting that they were able to charge me though. My credit card had expired and was reissued between now and then with a new expiration date. Evidently they don't need a valid expiration date to charge you? What the heck is the expiration date for then, exactly? They billed me for 5 months at once too. Odd.

I bought a couch at The Brick about 16 years ago. If The Brick had charged me 60 dollars on my CC this month, and somebody made a snide comment to me such as "No authenticator? ", I would have punched them in the face. Twice.

It doesn't matter if you authorized them to charge you or not. If someone has your info they can just go to Reactive Content ID if you never took your CC off when you quit and they get to play xi on your dime.

I don't know what I said to warrant such attacking, aggressive, and rude language towards me. I just wanted to share my experience with others. TheMysteriousX did some research and found out that it looks like a stolen account and not a complete billing error. So the underlying issue was solved.
