Someone stole my check

Recently graduated and my grandma sent me a check. She called because I never sent a thank you note and apparently the check was cashed almost a month ago. The only probable thing I can think happened was that it went to the wrong address and the asshole it went to actually deposited the check and the bank allowed it even though it wasn't made out to them. What kind of dumbass bank does this? The check was also not signed.

Any BG legal people know what I can do? I called and told them to call their bank and look into it. I feel so powerless because I have no idea who it went to. Hopefully they can track down and get a name and I can either confront whoever did it or take some legal action?

Bank's responsible if the check wasn't signed. They're supposed to check ID/sig/account # when a check is cashed. At the very least your grandmother should be able to get her money back. Ask for the cancelled check, it's proof you weren't negligent. If the bank gives you trouble, go to the police.

If his grandma wrote the check out to cash, then I'd say it wasn't the banks fault.
If she wrote his name on it, then he'd have to forge his signature, which is completely different.

Unless your name is Cash, how do you expect your bank to know the person who's signing their name is not the person who the check was written for?

You can get a copy of it from the bank, or rather your grandma can. She can also file a police report when it is tracked as to who's account it was deposited in. If it was cashed by a check cashing center then it might be harder to track the thief. If your grandma's bank is decent she should be able to get refunded and send you one registered mail (sig required).

You might also let the post office know about it and they will file a report for the mail person who works your area. When they are done with their investigation they send you a report and or call you about their results.

If you live in an apartment complex or condo and share a central mail container with other tenants, let the apt manager know your mail was stolen.

I work at a credit union and our policy says a check made out to cash can be cashed by anyone who has an account with us, or anyone who has a check drawn off us made out to cash. I hate this policy, but meh
