    Concord (PC/PS5) - 5v5 Hero Shooter - August 23, 2024

Developed by Firewalk Studios (Former Bungie Devs)

We built Concord as a love-letter to aspirational sci-fi adventure, inspired by our favorite art, anime, films, and TV series. Combined with our deep love of multiplayer, we’re dedicated to creating those had-to-be-there, down to the wire moments with your friends and creating a sense of adventure as you discover more about the galaxy, the characters you play as, and the worlds you visit every time you log on.

In Concord, you play as the crew of the Northstar—a group of guns-for-hire known in our galaxy as Freegunners. The Freegunners roam the stars taking high-stakes jobs on worlds across Wild space, where they face other fiercely competitive Freegunner crews. From match-to-match, you’ll form your team of Freegunners with other players and battle it out with rival crews to take home the reward across a variety of maps and modes.

From the very beginning, we wanted to make a tight, well-balanced FPS that feels great to play from the moment you pick up the controller.

While our core gunplay will feel familiar to shooter fans, the versatility and variety of each Freegunner and their abilities makes it so aim and thumbskill alone aren’t always enough to come out on top. Each Freegunner’s abilities are designed to make it so that players of a wide range of skill levels and play styles can be effective—even those that are new to the genre—while providing additional challenge and depth for those looking for high-stakes, high-sweat competitive play.

From powerful mystics and towering robots to skilled gunslingers and snipers, we want each Freegunner’s personality and gameplay abilities to come alive in every element of how they play and the strategic considerations they create. Some Freegunners’ abilities are made for in-the-moment tactics, including casting walls of fire, throwing exploding knives, or lobbing trash bombs. Others can have an enduring impact on a match, like deployable walls that can block entire lanes, explosive traps, bullet-blocking domes, speed-granting spores, and more that persist across rounds and respawns.

Inspired by some our favorite fighting and strategy games, all of these abilities and mechanics come together to create a unique asymmetry to the characters and opportunities for improvisation that make every fight and every match-up a chance for something different and unexpected to happen.

Alongside getting to know the crew of the Northstar through gameplay, you’ll also have an opportunity to see their stories unfold through cinematic vignettes that will premiere in-game, starting weekly from launch. These brief cinematic vignettes will feature ongoing narrative arcs that grow the characters’ stories, relationships, and unpack the broader Concord galaxy and life as a Freegunner.

The Concord galaxy is full of danger and adventure, and we’ll be unwrapping more in the coming weeks and months. At launch, Concord will have a roster of 16 distinct Freegunners to learn and master, and the Northstar crew will grow over time through regular, free post-launch updates that introduce new playable Freegunners, maps, modes, cinematic vignettes, and more.

Their EOS letter made it sound like they were going to try and XIV 2.0 this thing, or at least it sounded like they were tearing it down to try again with some changes suggested. My guess is if they bring it back they'll probably try to make it F2P with more aggressive MTXs, and probably adjust the style a bit.

Honestly? It didn't look awful to me. It was a slower than most modern tweaker shooters and TBH i hate tweak shooters, its just too much for me, in geezer terms I liked Halo CE more than Quake. So I was happy to see a game coming out where the combat and movement was a bit slower, since the market already has PLENTY of fast paced shooters.

Shame is I was >not< spending $40 on it. I think they pretty much murdered the game the second they put a pricetag in it, when every single other big name, popular game in that genre (hero shooter) is Free. You literally cannot break into THAT genre with a price tag, it was doomed on arrival and whoever approved that decision should be fired.

It didn't help that the art direction was fucking atrociously bad. Like they went with realistic graphics yet the characters all look like they'd belong better in something like OW. like 90% of the roster looked like they could be un-interactable background NPCs from Starfield.

This is majorly off topic but I started following this guy after you posted this video cause I liked how he presented things.

But his videos have become unwatchable because he's jumped on the "Anti Woke/Feminism Bad/pronouns are ruining the games industry " grift. His latest video is how the Woke/Feminist crowd is now attacking him and he got "fired" from a volunteer job at the cancer shelter where his female boss "Laughed at him and told him men weren't equals to women".

it is a shame how many critic types have been hollowed out by the anti-feminism end-wokeism horseshit. it's like it's the only way they can interpret art and media and the world around them

I'm kinda annoyed by the whole debate in general, I'm of the opinion that DEI itself is fine and is in fact a good thing, but at the same time if a game comes out that happens to be "woke" and I have, what I feel, are valid complaints about the design decisions or the gameplay, I literally get told to STFU and stop being a bigot, so I've just stopped commenting on games until this shit sorts itself out.

DEI is a good thing? Maybe, but, its how its being skewed and weaponized recently to fit certain groups agendas. Both for and against. The problem is many games are sacrficing good writing, character design and gameplay for the sake of these agendas. When a dev litterally says if you dont like it dont play it, its not for you, on a multi million dollar title you know there is a huge issue. Instead of inclusion its creating more division which companies are starting to realize, and this goes beyond gaming. Street fighter 6 did it right. Including characters that are part of DEI does not mean removing everything else others find appealing.

I find it a bit hard to stomach claims that big AAA games were ruined by inclusivity. Those budgets are so big that they could easily afford to hire a prominent head writer (and let them staff a writing room) to get any kind of compelling story/universe they want. They either failed to do so or failed to execute it. The budget is there.

Blaming "DEI" when you are lighting hundreds of millions of dollars on fire is a joke. Small teams make compelling, inclusive games on shoestring budgets (Celeste, Hades, Undertale, etc.). The problem with bad AAA games isn't inclusivity, it is that they started with a bad game idea and spent most of their budget on great graphics.

Edit: also kinda funny that YouTuber went down the anti-woke anti-DEI rabbit hole considering like 80% of his complaints about the designs is that they are boring (for people with nonstandard color perception).

This is how I approach it. Legitimately I think the people attacking "Woke" and "DEI" are stabbing at the wrong target. This is a failing from the top down. Like, I hate the Saints Row reboot as much as anyone else but its not because "WOKE INCLUSION" its because the story was just wack, the characters were written like out of touch old people mimicking College age California kids, and the gameplay/gunplay felt especially outdated by todays standards... not to mention the graphical weirdness like Sandstorms. I have a similar complaint with Crackdown 3, despite loving the first 2 games, the third game just felt like they didn't really do enough to improve the formula for it to not feel outdated and a little stale, not to mention axing the story line from the second game entirely.

Crackdown 3 fails for almost every single reason Saints Row Reboot failed, yet Wokeness isn't blamed for its failure cause the easy target wasn't there.

You could argue that they hired someone as a writer based on DEI and thats why the story and characters are bad and MAYBE with solid evidence you could be right, but there have also been a lot of really good games out there that are likely also the product of "DEI" and "Woke", I'd argue the ratio of good games to bad games from "non woke" and "woke" studios is basically equal, people have just been so caught up in culture war bullshit that whenever a game flops and has "Woke" elements, the Grifters dive on it and blame its failures entirely on the woke elements rather than the fact the game was probably just bad. Thus, through a social lens, these games gain more notoriety than your regular, shitty flopware title.

What are these "valid" complaints, exactly? lol.

I didn't like a lot of the character designs because they looked bland to me, not because there weren't enough white guys or naked women.

most of the complaints I had were to do with the color scheme on the characters and the fact that the game as a whole didn't really feel much different to playing Overwatch from my perspective, except if I wanna play Overwatch it's F2P instead of $40 USD.

PirateSoftware recently took a look at it and he mirrored most of the complaints I had with the character design, the base skins look like one of those random mish mash colored skins you'd get as a "common" drop skin you'd get in other games you would never want to use.

karbs when did you become based

but yes, more or less in total agreement. i am sure there are some products, somewhere, that took a nosedive in quality because there was some corporate mandate to gut the artistic vision and promote token diversity at all costs. but far far more often it is simply bad writers writing diversity and socially conscious themes badly. and the ratio is not any greater than old-school fuck yeah jacked white dudes plowing babes and killing things (a genre i hold dear when done well) writers writing badly.

i always think back to Mass Effect Andromeda and the shitstorm it entailed. were there poorly written themes and characters and retcons concerning diversity, representation etc? absolutely. but everything in that game was fuckin poorly written. a woman says sorry my face is tired when commiserating about your dead father. but the anti-SJW incel crowd feels personally attacked by one, not the other, and grifters realized they could make a million bucks off it.

and that was reinforced by The Last of Us Part II and the hissy fit thrown over it. it was a well-written game crucified for representation, when that representation barely mattered. Ellie being gay was almost entirely immaterial to the plot. Abby being a jacked white girl only mattered cuz she could swing a golf club. it only mattered because some people can only see the world through the lens of woke bad, not woke good.

woke done well is good, woke done poorly is bad. idk how we became so lost from such simple logic.

oh yeah i missed this, the criticism well has absolutely been poisoned by the grifters. things like The Acolyte and The Witcher deserve harsh criticism, censure, auto-da-fés, but so many among the alt-right hate them so loudly for the wrong reasons. it utterly backfires and allows the creators to hide behind look, prejudice! while avoiding the legitimate criticism.

What exactly does DEI and wokeness have to do with color schemes and character design? Sometimes games just suck ass
