Win7 resolution question

Having issues with windows changing res on me. Using a HDTV as monitor and a receiver when i switch receiver from 1 device to another this breaks HDMI's "handshake" or whatever they call it and TV is forced to a lower res because of it now problem is windows also changes res on its own to match the TV and when it does this it crashes programs on me and reloading them again and again really gets annoying.

My question is is there anyway to lock windows 7 res so when TV changes res windows wont there by keeping my programs from crashing.

I googled for a bit, and didn't really find a super easy answer to this, which is kind of weird.

If you have an nvidia card you might be able to force a resolution in the nvidia control panel.

If you haven't, you might try restarting the machine while it's all set up - I had issues with scaling reverting back to defaults every time until I did that.
