So is this like an alternate universe that doesn't follow the timeline of the other shows?

It looks more like a movie lol

//edit nvm, reading the imdb summary makes a little more sense

This is a rip from Wiki it also looks like the first show will be a 2hr movie followed by a series.

While a first ship was sent to seed the galaxies with Stargates, the Destiny was to follow a pre-programmed mission to explore these galaxies until the Ancients ascended and left the ship unmanned. In order to reach this ship, an address would have to be dialed consisting of nine chevrons, a possibility that had been unknown in the previous Stargate series.[6]

The series begins when a team of soldiers and scientists from present-day Earth step through the Stargate to find the Destiny after their base is attacked.[7] They are unable to maneuver the ship or even return to Earth, but they can use the Stargate to visit planets when the Destiny comes into the range of another Stargate and stops for brief periods of time.[8] Life support including air supply is also a problem at first.[9] There will be three major deaths in the pilot episode and one suicide by episode six.[10] The writers have discussed the possibility that each season represents a voyage of the Destiny through a different galaxy.[11]

Stargate Universe is written to appeal to both veteran fans and newcomers. It will be firmly entrenched in pre-established Stargate mythology without relying on it too often.[8][12] Although it will still have the familiar Stargate themes of adventure and exploration,[8] the show will focus mostly on the people aboard the ship.[13] SGU will be more serialized than its predecessors, but the writers attempt to resolve each character story within the episode.[8] There is a conscious effort to avoid making SGU too serialized, and the serialization will mainly stem from character development.[14] The industry describes the show with the buzz words "dark and edgy".[8] According to Robert C. Cooper, the essence of the story is "that sort of fear and terror of a tragedy combined with the sense that there is hope for us in the basic ways in which human beings survive".[8] The increased levels of drama will still be balanced with humor to avoid pretentiousness. The differences between good and evil will be less apparent, as the ship will be populated with flawed and unprepared characters who were not supposed to go here.[8] According to Brad Wright, the show will "hopefully explor[e] the truly alien, and [avoid] the rubber faced English-speaking one". There will be aliens, but not a single dominant villain race like SG-1's Goa'uld and Atlantis' Wraith.[8][15]

Yea, it looked cool when I saw the preview before some movie. But if it's a series I doubt it. I haven't really watched much of the other series. Don't know why I'd change now ;x

    Fuck yes.

I watched all 15 seasons on SG-1/Atlantis in a row (took about a 2-3 weeks), I'm incredibly excited for this.

10 bucks says the 3 deaths in the Pilot are all the big-name actors, Ming Na, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Christopher MacDonald, basically everyone but Robert Carlisle.

Main young dude is hot as shit too.

I love the Stargate franchise with all it's many flaws, so unless the first few episodes are absolutely dreadful, I'll probably give this an entire season to impress me. That said, the writers' credibility is pretty low with me after the last 2 seasons of SG-1 and some of the later Atlantis devlopments.

One thing the writing team has always been good at is dry sarcastic humor and great dialogue, so as long as the show is cast well (and it appears to be) I'll be happy even if the story takes a while to really ramp up.

I dunno, maybe I view the series differently because I never watched it when it was on the air, and only watched all the episodes in sequence a few months ago, but the only part that was remotely awkward for me was the paradigm shift in SG-1 S9/S10. I got used to it quickly, mostly because of the dynamic between Vala/Mitchell and the rest of the team, but I'm not sure if it would have felt weirder if I had watched farscape beforehand (which I didnt).

In a sense, it feels like Sci-Fi (SORRY, SYFY) is trying to cash in the whole gritty desperate human impact thing that made Battlestar Galactica so popular, with a little Star Trek: Voyager thrown in, but as long as the show does its part to either stick to canon or forge a plausible/creative one of it's own I'll be more than willing to give it a few seasons before things really get up to speed.

Oh and in case anyone was wondering, since March/April I've been on a huge sci-fi binge, I've watched the following series online, all in a row, with almost no breaks in between:

Star Trek: Enterprise (3 seasons? 4?)
Babylon 5 (which I've seen already, and is honestly better than every star trek but TNG but that's another story) (5 seasons, 5 movies)
The New Outer Limits (7 seasons or so, whatever's on hulu that I haven't seen previously)
    Stargate SG-1 (10 seasons, 2 movies)
    Stargate Atlantis (5 seasons)
Sanctuary (1 season, can't wait til this comes back!)
Defying Gravity (1/2 of a season, which actually got a lot better the episode after it was cancelled, hope they still show the last few eps online)
    Farscape (on season 3 now)

    Next up will be:
Battlestar Galactica (which I still haven't seen)
    Andromeda (seen season 1)
Earth: Final Conflict (seen season 1-3 but I dont' remember)
    Lexx (seen a few)
Then I'll probably start on Dr. Who/Torchwood and maybe Eureka/Warehouse 13

Oh and I've watched the first half of Law & Order: London somewhere in there...

    Busy busy!
