    The Event

I watched the premiere of this tonight. I don't think it was bad, but it wasn't anything earth shattering, either. Since I'm suffering from Lost withdrawls and looking for a good serial mystery, I'll be DVRing it for at least for a few more weeks to see if it catches my interest at all. I tried the same thing with Fastforward last year, though, and lost interest after a couple of episodes.

    Anyone else tune in?

    Spoiler: show
To me, it definitely felt like they were combining a lot of the main elements of 24, Lost,
and Heroes. The government conspriacy and clock elements (heck, even the text font) seem straight out of 24. The flashback style plotting is reminiscent of Lost, and the prison where Sophia's "people" are kept seems very heroes-esque, although aliens, demons, vampires, or angels could easily be another explanation. Not that I'm complaining about these being necessarily derivative, but about fifteen times in the episode I thought "Oh, this is just like show XXX did it," and that's about fourteen times too many. The climax also seemed a little underwhelming given all the buildup they had for it. I'll get over it if the show's good, but first impressions are OK at best.

I think it has potential, reminded me of FlashForward more than anything (which ended up being pretty good near the end).

I'll check in the morning. I've also been looking forward to this cause I need a show to fill my Lost hole. Sad to hear it wasn't anything to write home about. Guess I'll have to wait for the new O'quinn Emerson show.

Edit: Bleh, shit you did not just compare it to flash forward did you? Guess I won't even give it a look. That show as such a disappointment.

Don't get me wrong, I hated FlashForward for the majority of the season, but it got interesting at the end IMO.

FlashForward was very good the first few episodes and went epic the last 2-3. If they didnt slow it down to a freken crawl mid season it would of definitely got picked up for season 2. But "The Event" looks just like a FlashForward plot idea. Some strange shit happens and there seems to be a group conspiracy behind it and they slowly reveal whats going on.

It has potential if they dont fail mid season. Seems thats were most shows lose people, Epic start > Filler > Filler > Epic ending.

    Spoiler: show
The event at the end of the first episode is that a plane is highjacked and flown into a Miami mansion which is hosting a gathering of people including the president of the US and his family. Right before it hits the building, a "wormhole" opens up, the plane flies into it and disappears instead of hitting the house. Everyone on the ground is fine but confused, and the wormhole disappears as TV cameras catch the whole thing on tape. Whether this is actually The Event or just an event is currently unclear. Dialogue earlier in the episode imply this might not be The Event, but merely a prelude of things to come.

I'm still going to follow the show, but it was highly annoying to me. Within the first 6 minutes, the timeframe jumped back and forth like 5 times... 23 minutes earlier, 13 months earlier. It's like they copied the style of Lost while dumbing it down adding captions before each scene change. Hopefully, they'll do this less as episodes go on. One thing I loved about 24 is by design, it'll have a 100% linear timeline of the show. I'm okay with using the plot device, but The Event uses it way too much.

I found this interview with the show's creator, Nick Wauters. It provides me some hope they're at least aware of some of the pitfalls these kinds of shows are prone to.

I enjoyed it. The whole layering a flashback on another flashback and then present and then flashback again was a bit annoying but I'm hoping they'll break away from that a bit.

I'm surprised it took me so long to recognize Sophia as Kerry Weaver from ER. Jason Ritter looks a lot like his dad.

As for the plot, it's hard to say. The premiere was an hour of exposition with not much real info and 5 minutes of action. I think they spent way too much time setting up everything on the hotel or cruise ship or whatever it was.

As far as the event referenced in the title, that will be a season finale or second season thing. We won't get all the info for a while.

After watching the ending I don't think I'm going to bother watching this show, starting to get burnt out on alternate universes

Bleh.. this show sucks. I don't know why I even wasted two hours of my life on it, much less one.

I wasn't any more impressed with last night's episode than the first one. But I see at least some potential there, and I'm hankering for a serialized drama, so I think I'll give it at least 2 more episodes. If it doesn't hook me by the 4th episode, I don't think it's ever going to. The revelation of
    Spoiler: show
    non-terrestrial origin

    annoyed me.

I would actually be surprised if this ends up being true. It seems too early to reveal exactly what they are. My first thought was they might be future humans. The fact that they mentioned chimpanzees being two percent different from humans genetically in the same conversation as the "aliens" being one percent different seems to also hint at this. The "aliens" may just be the next step in future human evolution who have come back in time.

Thought the same thing. And the concept of future humans kinda has me intrigued... enough at least to watch a few more weeks.

I'm hoping the same thing, and that that comment was entirely a red herring. They do seem to be providing answers at a reasonable clip, at least.

so... what, they time traveled back to stop a disastrous "event?" hmm, i guess it would be fun if they can properly pull it off, i mean it would give a pretty reasonable explanation to why they don't wanna say where they are from

maybe what happened to those people at the end of ep2 has something to do with it? a demonstration?

That hospital scene was all sorts of retarded.

"Runs past a bunch of doctors to hide in room"
-"You see a guy run past here?"
    "Nope!"

    I like the episode though.

    I'm on board with the
    Spoiler: show
    time traveler
    theory as well.

It'll be interesting to see how this goes. Some of the random flashbacks are annoying.

Ok so he's a good swimmer... that'll help him get out of the hospital.

The whole thing with the cops was braindead as well... wouldn't a plane almost crashing into the White House make national news, regardless of the spin they put on it?

They spent way too much time on
    Spoiler: show
the agent that was 'one of them', especially since they told us he was in the first five minutes of the premiere.

It wasn't the White House... was it?
