Rough draft of this that Rokku worked on. Figured I'd toss it up here on the first post so people can find FC's easier. Send Rokku or me a PM with your FC if you're not up there.

So you want to be a Pokemon master, do you? As long as your name isn't Ash Ketchum, Billy Bagem or something along those lines, you're probably off to a good start.
So, where to begin?
The most important things you should begin to look into and understand is the concept of IVs and EVs.
Put simply, IVs (short for Individual Values) are a value for each stat ranging from 0-31 that are unique to a pokemon when it's generated (caught/hatched/etc), and are incapable of being altered in any way. These values determine how far above the base value of it's associated stat the total number is. As the name implies, think of them as the individual strengths of your unique pokemon.
EVs (or Effort Values) are a tad bit more complicated, and usually the point where people begin to stumble in understanding. Do you all remember the old saying that leveling with rare candies made your pokemon weaker? Well, this was entirely because of EVs (albeit based on an outdated method of accumulating and applying them). To put it as simply as possible, EVs are like stat experience that you gain based on the type of pokemon that you gain EXP from.
For example, say your Snivy beats an Oshawott. If you check under the "Effort Values Earned" heading on Serebii's pokedex, you'll notice that your Snivy has gained 1 SpAtk EV. Now, what does all of this mean exactly? Do you simply get +1 to your SpAtk stat? Not exactly.
Every pokemon has a hard cap on EVs at 510, with the maximum in any one stat being 255. The actual formula for how they add anything is x/4, with X being the value of EVs put into that stat. Simple math will then tell you that you should never raise a stat's total EVs over 252. Aside from that, they can be added to any stats in any method you choose.
What about vitamins, you might ask? Well, good question. Vitamins raise the EV of the associated stat by +10, up to a maximum of 100, at which point they have no effect. It's a great method for skipping a chunk of EVs that you need to put onto something through combat. Alternatively, there's a series of berries that can lower EVs, and bracers that add +4 to any EVs gained in particular stats.
Those are the basics of training your pokemon to play against other people. More information regarding advanced strategies, movesets, and further explanations of EVs and IVs can be found at the following locations:

EVs - http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Effort_values
IVs - http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wi...ividual_values

Also worth note are pokemon natures, which raise one stat by 10% and lower another by 10%. These calculations are done on top of IVs and EVs, so they can have a dramatic impact on how strong your trained pokemon is.
More information regarding natures and the specific effects of each individual one can be located at:

What's that now? Your Pidove came with mail attached with even more questions? Alright, alright, let's see what we can do to answer some of our most common questions via PokeMail.
Q. Where can I find pokemon x? ("Fuck this shit where are you Pikachuuuuu?")
A. If you're having issues locating something or understanding how to run into it, a great resource for this is Serebii's PokeEarth. Click on the route you're looking in, and you'll be able to find the methods and encounter rates for any pokemon in that area. Alternatively, check the pokedex listing, and follow the "details" link under locations.
Q. Where can I grind after the Elite four? Everything jumped up to level 65 and suddenly I feel like I just started the game over with a starter with a broken leg.
A. There's a variety of places to grind EXP in the post-game. In terms of trainer battles, you can check the Royal Unova and Sports Stadiums for daily matches against level 65 trainers, or you can toss on your favorite lucky egg, head up to the Great Chasm or Challenge Cave, and grind the hell out of wild pokemon. The Elite Four rematches are also an option, but they're 70+ now and result in a fight against Alder as well.
Q. Can I connect to WiFi with a ROM of the game?
A. Answers seem to differ depending on who you ask, but it looks like ROMs running on flash carts are able to connect to the WiFi so far as at least being able to get FCs and possibly run FC based multiplayer. All signs still appear to point towards Nintendo rejecting anything but retail copies when attempting to connect to services like the GTS though. No word on if ROMs or Flashcarts will be compatible with the dream world either.
Q. Something something Dream World something something?
A. The Dream World is an online aspect of the game that doesn't go live until sometime in the spring of 2011. As for specifics, the dream world is more or less self-explanatory, it's a service that allows you to sync up your game file with Nintendo's servers and a small flash-based interface to unlock pokemon with special abilities and items that are otherwise unavailable in the normal game. Anyone registered and confirmed on your PalPad will be added into the network of dream world houses you can visit, to boot.
Now for your meat and potatoes, the friend code list. If you add someone, have the courtesy to let them know so they can add you back, or if you put your name on the list, just add everyone else that's on it. Pretty simple.
