[Updated at 10:53 a.m. ET] Sandy Hook school is on lockdown and students are not being evacuated, a Newtown police spokesman tells us.

[Posted at 10:30 a.m. ET] Breaking news coming in - Connecticut State Police are responding to reports of a shooting at a Newtown elementary school in southwestern Connecticut, according to police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance.

We'll bring you more details as soon as we get them.

Our affiliates in the area are saying the school is the Sandy Hook Elementary School.

It really makes me sad that school shootings seems to be a fucking monthly occurrence. Read in an article that at least two kids are wounded, one with a hand wound and the other had blood all over his face.

At least one person is dead after a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dickinson Drive.

Police said there are multiple shooting victims. They were still searching the school at 11 a.m., and police dogs had been brought in.

State police personnel led children from the school, following the shooting.

Sources said a person believed to be a shooter is dead. Earlier reports of a second shooter are unconfirmed.

Shortly after 9:40 a.m., police reported that a shooter was in the main office of the school. A person in one room had “numerous gunshot wounds,” police said.

Groups of students — some crying, some holding hands — were being escorted away from the school by their teachers. Some students were still in the school at 10:30 a.m., parents said.

Dozens of state troopers are on the scene assisting local police. Heavily armed police gathered in front of the school around 10:45 a.m., and a number of stretchers were set up.

A staging area has been set up for students and their parents near the school. Area hospitals have been alerted.

Afternoon buses and kindergarten has been cancelled.

Im starting to wonder what the effect of all these school shootings is going to do to our future generation...

Are they going to all grow up totally hating guns and we wind up in the future banning all firearms as they grow up to voting age and some become politicians? Will they grow up having a dark fetish for guns to cope with the trauma? Will they just become more normal fucked up Americans and life goes on as usual?

Wouldn't be surprised if a study comes out 20 years later asking the same questions lol.

Metal detectors could probably be talked about but that opens up a huge can of worms regarding the state of our society if you need to check students and teachers in elementary schools for weapons. Many children already live in shitty neighborhoods where gun violence is commonplace so it isn't like you need to see a school shooting to determine how people react to daily occurrences of violence close to home because it's already happening.

High Schools are already prisons for children with cops, metal detectors and random searches and many people simply don't care.

I've been wondering for a while if these stories should even be picked up by the media. I have this gut instinct that says that the more people see these events in the news, the more inclined they become to repeat what they see.

The media already does a ton of filtering regarding violence in the world and it's counterproductive to simply ignore reality. We've been at war forever and the lack of graphic images from the battlefield because some soccer moms will be butthurt if they see dead bodies or gore is pathetic considering the number of armchair warhawks. You have to go digging for what should be visible if the media was transparent.

There are already other sources for violent behavior to manifest from so we need not put on blinders when the results of our actions lead to undesired consequences.
